Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who are some famous (non-professional) cyclists?

Im trying to think up a list of famous, influential figures who are also cyclists. So far I've got:

Alfred Jarry
Albert Einstein
HG Wells
Mark Twain

I'm looking more for intellectuals rather than political figures and other famous folks.

Can anyone help me out?

oh, and I read about "The Quotable Cyclist" book and intend to pick that up soon, but that will likely focus on people who talked about cycling rather than those who simply rode.

Apparently he is/was pretty serious (recreation serious) - friends with Lance, etc. I had friends in Marin who would see him regularly coming in from a ride. I've seen him maybe a half dozen times in The City, but only in a car (him, not me).

Not that I don't appreciate the tongue-in-cheek and agree, but that USA Today article I found has Bush giving a experienced mountain bike racer a run for his money. I was surprised.

Zack from Saved by the Bell.

John Lennon was photographed on a bicycle at least once.

Kevin Bacon did that Quicksilver movie.

Ashlee Simpson is doing a bike messenger movie, too.

Nobody has seen Al Gore riding a bike.

Wait, wasn't this already done in the SS/FG forum a few months back?

The Wright brothers were bicycle mechanics, had a bicycle shop, and tested wing designs by attaching them to the front of a bike and observing said wings while riding. I guess that makes them bike riders.

I searched for 'famous' in titles and did not find it, was it OT on the thread? I'm really tired right now, there are probably better search terms that are escaping me.

Well - I want to be the first person to state that THIS is the "Jump the Shark Moment" of the Fixed Gear Bike Messenger culture. The worst part is that there is probably few other people on this planet more in antithesis to the entire Fixed Gear Culture than Ashlee Simpson. Christ.
