Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Worst ratio performance to price?

Some random guy pulled up next to me on my solo ride yesterday and within seconds he as belting off a litany of expensive things that poorly translate to speed or are otherwise generally useless, "ceramic bearings, Assos bibs, front wheel disk..." I think my shaped Cervelo tubing irked him.

I then dialed it up to 400 watts so that was the end of the conversation, but thanks to the wonder of the internet, you can continue here.

i've always thought that unless you're winning races, NONE of really NEED anything more than a decent steel or alu frame with 105/veloce components. that said, ignore that grump and kill it on your cervelo. cycling is anything but need...

I'm just teasing. If I had the coin my RS would have them. Unfortunately I don't have money to blow on something that doesn't perform any better than what I have.

I have a friend on some club rides who enjoys his endless chatter about his latest bike and the parts on it. I smile and when it gets to be too much I drift away and he latches onto someone else. If I wanted serious performance I would go to my long time friend Steve Delaire at www.rotatorrecumbents.com and get one of his machines.

Oh for crissake shut the F up. I NEED the Zipps, the Ti Speedplays, the lighter seat, the tubular tires.

Don't WRECK if for me you JERKS. Remember where you are (OCP Central) before you start irresponsible discusssions like this one.

I'm going to try to pretend I never saw this stupid thread. Have some consideration.

I paid the same as the SS for the Ti version. Plus my gf's cheap tektro brakes weren't doing it so I gave her my ultegra's. Then one of the cheap tektro's ended up on my fixie. It's win win.

I dare say ultra pricey, ultra light carbon bottle cages.

$20,000 to save 3g? no thanks

but there's no improvement in performance.

My gold chain (KMC x-10 sl) might fall in this category though. $75 or a bit more for a chain is silly, but it sure looks blingy. So might my Ti skewers

We have found that using ceramic ball bearings can provide speed increases of up to 4%, or a forty meters distance gained over every kilometer.

IF that's true (I know, it's hard to trust the source here), it's definitely not the worst. I would say something like an ultra-light carbon saddle would give you less of a benefit. Worse yet, it might actually slow you down if it doesn't agree with your taint.

Ti skewers? From the looks of things that chain set you back so far that you couldn't even afford a derailleur cable!

This is why I ride naked. Saves a ton of money. Althought the Chamois Cream sometimes spooks other cyclists when applied directly to the saddle.

Whatever... I scored a used carbon cage for a mere $600 AND it saved me 5g. You just gotta have some connections and/or be in the know. My LBS (aka sponsor) is gonna cut me a deal on the next one to complete the set ---- schwing!! Because I'm so fast.

Anything over an entry level bike is poor performance to price. If you take your average speed and divide by cost, I'd bet the most miles per hour per dollar spent comes from the cheapest bike you can find.

Oh, believe me, I want a nice bike. But if you're asking for a ratio of performance to price, I'd have to argue that that would be on the opposite end of the spectrum.
