Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CycleOps Fluid Trainer Question

I need some clarification.

I am about to "pull the trigger" on a CycleOps Fluid trainer. Performance carries a "Fluid Tempo" and everyone else has a "Fluid2." CycleOps website does not show anything for "Fluid Tempo."

What are the differences? The reason why I ask is because I have a Performance LBS, and I want them to price match Fluid2 online deals; they won't because they only have "Fluid Tempo" on the floor. Both carry an MSRP of $329.99

Not sure of the difference, but whatever you do, don't pay anything near MSRP on either trainer. You can get a new Fluid2 on eBay for under $300 shipped.

True - in fact it is $225 shipped from Brands Cycles online. I just don't want to wait for the 5-business day shipping. I need it for tonight!! That's why I want a price match from the LBS Performance.

Sounds like Performance has no clue. What a surprise.

Ok - I ended up buying the CycleOps Fluid Tempo. I clarified the mystery too. The Fluid Temp is the 2006 model year version of the Fluid2 that Performance bought out in bulk. The difference between it and the newer model is the quick release rachet mechanism for the roller-to-tire adjustment. Same fluid roller mechanism.

I purchased for $220 at the LBS Performance after they price matched.

I am pleased - all in all - after one hour on the trainer this evening.

The newer model also has a larger flywheel that supposedly improves the road feel...

I noticed the CycleOps sticker is all scratched and there were significant scratches on the frame. I'm kind of ticked but what can I expect from Performance?

What a bunch of clowns they were tonight, BTW. Maybe I will order the 2007 Fluid2 and return this when that arrives. It's not that it's structurally relevant, but you shouldn't have to pay >$200 for what amounts to a used product (e.g. scratched.)

It wasn't the floor model but the box was haggard indicating it'd been out of the box before.

Couple of questions to CycleOps fluid owners:

1. Is it normal for the resistance unit to get hot? Mine heats within minutes to high temperatures. (Too hot to touch.)

2. Is to normal for coasting to suck? I might be pedaling at 20 MPH, stop my cadence for 2 seconds to adjust, etc and the speed drops to 10 MPH. The pedal feel is fine when I am pedaling but the transition from "not pedaling" to "pedaling" is not natural.

Yes to both. CycleOps switched out my resistance unit to the newer '07 version with the big flywheel (weird vibration issue) and that does coast a little longer, but the speed still drops off quickly.

DrPete:

Was the change from the old to the 2007 resistance unit very substantial? That is, if you were me, would you return it for the newer one?

Nah, it wasn't a huge difference. I do like the lever design better than the screw knob, but it's not a major thing.

Difference isn't huge. More like they had to update their product in some way for the new model year, for the sake of "newness" and a higher price point.

I'd say keep what you have.
