I want a new data tracking system.
I want a bluetooth chest strap, speed and power meter.
I want to use those with a data logger on my blackberry. It could display in any infinite variety, already does gps, stores almost unlimited data (can transmit it somewhere if I run low or at regular intervals), give me audio tones over BT for heart rate/speed warnings and let me know when a call comes through. Would be *perfect*. Just would need a blackberry mounting system, but that should be easy enough.
Anyone know if the bluetooth strap and speed sensors exist? I dont think a power meter does, but maybe powertap could work some magic.

Yes, the Bluetooth strap and speed sensor already exists. That is how the Garmin Edge 305 works, at least according to what a couple different Garmin Tech's told me. I found it surprising considering Bluetooth isn't mentioned anywhere on their site. But it does make sense in that you can walk away from the bike and the HR continues or you can take the Edge with you and have someone ride the bike and the cadence still shows. It only works up to about 30 feet as all BT devices work that way.

But why bother to a blackberry?? You just upload to a real computer.

The Garmin wireless sensors are ANT. They talk in the Bluetooth frequency, but so does just about everyone else. They have a document on their site on how to interface with the protocol. Just have to find someone to implement it on the Blackberry side.

+1
The newest Powertap heads and heart rate straps also are ANT so the same strap will work with both computers.

It also said on the link you provided that Garmin purchased the company that developed ANT.

Which means ANT, for all intents and purposes, is now a proprietary technology unavailable to the rest of the world. While I definitely like the idea of the huge battery life, it provides no security, just incase the specs made anyone wonder why we use solutions like bluetooth with its fairly severe restrictions... (the bt speeds are already encrypted speeds, and an older revision of bt to boot)
I said blackberry because it is A: cheap, B: easy C: light and D: Legible. Computer would be useless, too heavy while on the road. Windows mobile would work, but weight and battery would be an issue.
j2me on the BB just seems to fit, but unless there could be an uber small usb to ANT adaptor it won't happen.

2 words. Total Integration. There. That's the design meeting for today folks. Now go back to your cubicles and deisign the ideal bicycle metrics package. I want the final designs on my desk before you leave, and expect testing of prototypes by Friday.
...this all has a target price of $149.99 (to be sold on E-Bay for $99) BTW....
