Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bloomington IN rides

I will be going back to Indiana for the Little 500 this weekend.
Does anyone have any good road routes to take in and/or around town? Bike shops?!

Incorporate a stop at Oliver winery, if you can. They're Apple Blossom Cider is frigging delicious. They're wines were very damn good, as well. They're honey mead is famous, too. Good for carb loading. Great place, great people. Beautiful, neat place to hang out. They have fresh baguettes from across the road, cheese, salamis, whathaveyou. One of the, if no the best midwest wineries we've been to. Wish I was there, right now...

revolution bike & bean (formerly bloomington cyclery) on 10th near yogi's.

as for routes, go to griffey lake to old 37 to the state forest to bean blossom to... ah forget it. just ask those guys where to go & they'll explain it better than i can. they know all the best routes. just make sure you do boltinghouse hill.

most importantly, make sure you hit up kilroy's for a wisconsin lunch bucket, upstairs for an a.m.f., bear's for a hairy bear, & finish it off by playing sink the biz at nick's. wish i could be there but i'm off to the tour de georgia. have fun.

Great weekend for it!
Routeslip has a nice little selection of Bloomington area routes here. A head's up: Simpson Chapel Road is completely closed off, so avoid the "Hilly Half Hundred" or the "HH2" routes (these are 50+ mile routes).

All three bike shops should have recommendations for you, depending on the kind of ride you want to take and I know Bikesmith's has copies of the Bloomington Bicycle Club's route maps.

Shops are:
Revolution Bike and Bean
401 E. 10th Street

Bikesmiths
112 S. College

Bicycle Garage
507 E. Kirkwood

Have a great time! See you on the road.

That's Revolution-- they're no longer at 10th and the Bypass. They've moved to 10th and Grant. Same great people and awesome bikes. Now with coffee.
