Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think I've made a decision

I want to race next year.

Nothing serious, but I'd like to be competitive.

In order to do so, I need to get my weight down.

My goals is 180 (from 232) and I am already down to 218.

My deal with my wife is when I hit 180, I will buy a new bike.

I think I am going to go with a CAAD8 frame and build it up with 105 or Ultegra or maybe Centaur if I can get a good deal.

Anyone have any suggestions for bikes in a similar price range as the CAAD8, that has experience in entry level racing?

If anything, racing once or twice now will give you more motivation to improve over the next year. Get the painful first couple races out of the way now so you can build on it this year!

I am going to do some track racing (on a car race track 1/3 mile), but no crits this year.

We have a baby due next month and I would rather invest my spare time there instead of doing the type of training I would want to do in order to race crits.

True...if there is something close enough by, I might give it a whirl so I can get spit out the back

If it's pretty flat I can probably hold my own for a while, it's the ascents I need to work on the most.

I've never ridden a CAAD 8 but from what I read and hear it is a great bike. I would definitely jump on it. Good luck in losing the weight!!!

You should at least do 1-2 races this year. By doing this it will show you what you need to work on between now and next year. My first race changed my training plan and goals completely

C'mon, man! Get your priorities in order!

Yeah, as hard as it is for us to admit, there are some things more important than the bike...

I got the frame! Thread here.

I found an auction where the guy was getting rid of a team (some local team in Arizona) with a Slice Premium + fork.
It has the team logos on it, but that does not bother me.

I got it for $344 shipped. I feel very lucky.

Now I have to wait until I reach my goal to build it up.

This will be a very big "carrot" for me.
