Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It was something I'd never heard of or seen before, called an "alleycat" race. It was mostly fixed gear riders but there were alot of roadies too. It was basically an unsanctioned race through the streets of St. Pete, FL where you go to 10 checkpoints. You get a new map at each checkpoint which tells you where the next one is. It was fiercely competitive, and has to be the most dangerous riding I've ever witnessed in my life. The best part was that the finish was at a warehouse with an afterparty. The prizes were also better than most USCF races I've been to. Anyone else done one of these?

Yeah we had one at my college in the fall, it was called the dirty apple alleycat (they call manhattan kansas the little apple). Was amazingly fun and there was a house party after of course. I think the first place trophey was a bike chain with a gold spray painted wheel hanging off of it and a number one welded to the middle.

I believe Montreal runs one every year. Winnipeg attempted one, but it didn't go over so well ... I was a marshall for that one and if they'd run another one I would have done it. It sounded like a lot of fun!
