Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

dura ace 7speed to 10 speed hub conversion

I'm looking at a nice set of used araya rims laced to dura ace hubs for stupidly cheap. unfortunately the rear wheel is 7 speed and I am building up an old frame with a 10 speed drivetrain. How hard would it be to change the wheel to accept a 10 speed cassette? 2 different lbs told me they couldn't do it.

I would venture to say you would need a new rear hub. Or there may be such thing as a free hub body replacement (the part that has the splines for the cassette). Your 7-speed hub will be too narrow for a 10-sp cassette.(did they even make free hubs for 7spd? if not then you will definately need a whole new rear hub)

In short, you will at least need a new free hub body, and at most a new rear hub.

If I were you I would just get a new Rear hub. It will be newer and nicer too.

Good luck!

Try something easier like installing Windows Vista on a 1985 IBM PC.

New rear hub = very doable although you might find shops reluctant to reuse the spokes.

https://sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html#transplants Straight from Sheldon Brown, assuming now that this is a freehub and not a freewheel rear. He does say this particular special DA threaded freehub FW7403 is not cheap, however.

Really? I've got a whole gruppo gathering dust. Not sure I want to part with it, not sure why, either.

Making D/A 74xx into 10 speed is just nuts, imho.

Actually I'd go with the current Ti-83+, it'd haveway more processing power and be easier to find. On topic, even if it's a freehub and not a freewheel (not likely) if you're going to pay for 10sp then buy a new hub, or at the least an 8, preferably 9sp hub. I must say that for all of it's age, my 8sp dura ace hub still feels really smooth.

Spokes are cheap in the scheme of a build. Also, the flanges have moved a bit over the years which might cause a problem with the spokes (although probably not).
