Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

3 year old's feat of strength (not a RyanF thread)

So my 3 year old (turned 3 in December), was trying to hook up our bicycle trailer that his 20 month old brother had sat down in to his 12" bike. I jokingly go along with it. It's a model that clamps to the chain stay; it fit on a little piece of his seat stay of his little fisher rather well. I was thinking that he would hop on, try to turn the pedal, and then get off. I was wrong. He pulled him around our cul-de-sac for a bit, then we went on about a 3/4 mile ride. I did have to provide a bit of assist up a little hill, but for the most part he did all the pedalling. We drew some strange looks.

Before we put on the proper helmets...

Leaving for the ride (I am on the wife's old Bianchi -- moved behind them moments after this was taken).

Returning from the ride (little one removing his helmet in the trailer).

I am sure somehow this is bad parenting, but I was impressed. Here is a video link if anyone wants to see it: https://s159.photobucket.com/albums/t...t=MOV04828.flv

Your son has some strong legs! I'm sure that if he practices enough with the loaded trailer, he'll be a dynamo once you unhook it.

I droped the hammer in a fit of anger, and the three year old was like, "daddy, daddy," but I didn't care because I am like Jan. Or maybe we averaged ~2MPH. It had to be one of those two.

I dislike children and I loathe the day that I (and others, I'm sure) pass on my genes.

But that is damn cute.

The Cypress called my kid cute. I feel I have arrived. I was personally scared sh**less right up until the moment the first one was born. Then I got more scared. Then I got used to it. Now I'm just too tired to really care...

This really will be the last time I reply to my own thread for a while. I have another clip where he yells, "I want to go fast again!" He was getting off the bike and walking up to the top of our neighbors driveway, then flying down it. His brother just laughed.

If you dislike children, perhaps you should not have any

Becoming a father was the scariest thing I have ever done, but the feeling you get from your little ones in absolutely priceless.

+1. Or in my case, 2.5. My oldest (almost 4 yr old girl) and I have piles of fun together. She talks frequently about how she's going to race bicycles like daddy. My 16 month old son worships the ground I walk on and if I have my way, will love 2-wheelers even more than I did growing up - and I LOVED my bike when I grew up. #3 due in October will hopefully turn out much the same.

Oh, and ericcox, that's awesome!

His seat is too low.

So well said. I've only been a parent since 1/1/07, and completely feel the same way.

Just a thought, and maybe it's the angle of the picture or something, but it appears that the helmet on your 20 m.o. is not secured and just sitting on his head (which could render it useless in the event that it were needed). Might want to check and tighten that lid up some. Again, it might just be the picture, I'm not trying to chastise or anything, but would feel remiss if I didnt mention it. Cool pics and looks like all are having a fun time.

Post of the day!

I would love to take my 2yr old son out on a bike; but he is still in his, "look a bug!" phase.

Excelent, I assume next year the baby will be replaced by a 90 pound bag of cement.

Yes -- just west of Fort Worth

You are correct. We haven't found a helmet yet that he cannot find a way to undo. This one had been the most successful and stayed on for a good 40 minutes before he worked it off as we turned onto our street.

My kid cant pedal down the driveway without falling over, even with training wheels.. my poor kids got their mom's gracefulness genes.
Nolan refused to pedal anything until we got the bicycle. He was frustrated with how slow the tricycle was, so he would just get off and run. Now the tricycle is his fly down the driveway toy.
