compact vs regular crankset/ pros & cons
I was just curious what exactly am I in for if I have some minor hills to climb with my compact Marin Lucas Valley?
I know when I purchased my lovely bike some of the guys said I might have to work little harder on the hills with less options that are normal for a compact due to it being lighter and with one ring less; my 2006 has this Crankset: FSA Omega Compact 50/36 with Exo BB System? The 2007 Lucas Valley "regular" has a crankset FSA CFM, 53/42/30.
I notice the number relationship between the two years, the 07 goes a little higher and little lower. How noticeable is the difference in terms of feel?
Can someone shed some light on this?

The 2006 is a Compact. The 2007 is a triple.
You'll go up steep hills easier in that triple, what with its 30 tooth low.
There are tons of threads on compacts.... I'll see if I can dig up ggg300's catch all thread before you get jumped on for not using the search function.....
edit... click here for ggg300's Compact Crank Overload thread. It's got tons and tons of information and links. Good luck!

You currently have a compact.
The 2007 has a triple, which gives you more options.
The standard double (non-compact) would be 53/39 instead of 50/36. The triple would give you more low and more high-end, the compact is a little lighter and easier to keep set-up for precise shifting, though I've not had trouble with the triple that I use.

If you use the search function, there are a ton of threads discussing compact cranks. IMO, your 50/36 with the 12/27 cassette that came stock on that bike should do you fine for all but the nastiest hills.

hello
You running a compact vs a triple all depends on your fitness level and how you're able to handle the surrounding terrain. For many years while I was running a 53/39 crankset, I had always wished for a slightly smaller ringset as I was really not strong enough to push a 53 ring for one and I felt the 39 wasn't low enough for many of the climbs in my area......and this was before compact doubles became popular.
