Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Polar HRM - battery replacement

Will I screw it up if I take my 725 to a regular jeweler instead of sending it back to Polar for battery replacement? This whole maintenance thing is cheesing me off.

Probably not... As far as I know, most bike computer stuff just takes CR2032's (3 cateye's and my garmin HR monitor & cadence sensor use them).

If it takes CR2032's, you could try here. I just picked up 5 spares from these guys and they showed up in a couple days.

EDIT: ohhhh... I forgot that polar stuff is more of a watch type thingy...

You need to send it in.

I disassembled mine and was going to attempt to change it myself. Its not NEAR as simple as a simple watch battery replacement.

If youre super handy and not afraid to screw stuff up, let us know how it goes. Im fairly mechanically inclined and I didnt want to undertake it.

I did mine. It is a little more complicated than a regular watch, but doable. Just be careful and watch where all the little parts go.

I replaced batteries in multiple Polar units multiple times. The lower units aren't hard at all. The higher units become more difficult, but are still very easy to do. Take your time and you can change it yourself.

A jewler should be able to do it easily.

Finding the right battery was much harder than changing it. Takes about 5 min.

Most jewelers will not have this battery.. The best thing is to buy online and have a jeweler install it.. I have a couple polar monitors so I always have one on hand..

CR2354 battery

I had the same problem - IR download of ride data became flakey and finally stopped. Not enough joules in the battery to power the IR transmitter. Polar 720 in my case.

I found out there are CR2354 and different CR2354 batteries. They have the same diameter and thickness, but the one Polar uses has a step-down to a smaller diameter. The "cheap" 2354s are a constant diameter and don't fit. Panasonic CR2354s (which is what Polar uses) fit. I was able to find the correct (and also the incorrect) size at Batteries Plus for about $8 plus sales tax. The Nuon version is the WRONG one that doesn't fit. I bought one from a local store - no idea if the specific battery can be ordered from them online.

Once you have the correct battery, you need a jeweler's phillips head screwdriver, a magnifier (if your eyesight is like mine), and a little patience to remove the watch back, pop out the battery, and insert the replacement. Make sure the gasket is properly seated and you gently squeeze the case to make sure it's sealed when tightening the screws. Press the red button and go set the time and date. I discovered that stored ride data and most settings (wheel size, rider data) is saved and was not lost. Hooray! (I had data from a ride up Skyline Drive and a long LT interval ride I wanted to save.) Good for another 2+ years.

I just put a new Panasonic CR2354 in my S720 today. About 10 minutes. Dont bother with the jewelers. It's too easy to do yourself. Buy a set of small screwdrivers and order the batteries from an online retailer. I got mine from a local battery place named Battery Warehouse. They ordered them for me last friday and I got them today. I bought 2 so i'd have an extra. 7.95 apiece.

Had a jeweler do mine (S720) and now the altimiter and thermo unit don't work. I was told POLAR had to plug it in and reset it.

In other words, I wasted that money

that's strange, because they have 24 hour turn around for battery replacement, from when they receive it to when they ship it. i just hate the fact that they no longer allow walk-in service, because i live about 5 miles from the service center and used to be able to drop it off and pick it up the next day, when it needed service...
