I was doing my local time-trial course earlier tonight (right around dusk)(it's a 15mile course, rises to 6,800ft from 6,500ft in 7miles, so the trip back is great, two lane country road, medium traffic flow) and on the way back a pickup didn't pass me for the last 5miles before my turn off and just drove behind me and turned his brights on when there wasn't any cars coming the other way. It wasn't because he coudln't see me, I have a light on the back of my bike, and each time he turned the brights on I gave him a thumbs up. When he passed me he gave a wave. It was good motivation to keep it above 30mph the way home. It was liking my own Johan Bruynel lighting my road so I could see.
And I live in a town with no other cyclists except a classmate that I've seen, so they're not use to us, or maybe just not sick of us yet.

I don't generally pay too much attention. Lately my favorite was on US129 through the Smokies, a well known curvy road. I was starting to accelerate down hill when a touring biker (de mota type) came by, some larger touring type bike. He had pretty good saddlebags on. I caught pieces of his slipstream and kept up down a long hill with lots of curves. I could see the guy keep doubletaking in his mirrors!

My favorite was being passed by a pickup with a young (5-6) boy in the back seat crouched down behind the front seats. He looked over his shoulder to make sure dad wasn't looking, and with a look of complete fear in his eyes slowly, oh so carefully extended his middle finger.

I'm just happy when people swing wide around me instead of buzzing by me at 45 mph.

I was out with about 7 or 8 of my teammates, all of us wearing our new team kits. We were stopped at a light when a woman, who was jogging across the street waved her arms to get our attention. When we all looked she smiled and started to move her hands around a la sign language. One of my teammates rolled over to her and started to sign back. She smiled and took off. He said, "She wanted to let us know that she likes our kits."

I was about 600 miles into a 920 mile, self-supported, loaded tour down the Pacific coast when a man at a stop sign asked me about the trip. I filled him in after which he asked, "How old are you?" I replied that I was sixty-six years old. His face lit up with excitement. He said he was going home and dig out his old Schwinn and start riding again. He looked to be in his mid fifties.

I was out on a training ride last Spring in my team kit and had a guy on a Harley catch up to me on a beautiful residential road along the shore of a lake I live near. I heard him coming up and so I took the right side of the lane in order to give him room to pass. Instead of passing, he came alongside me and shouted "you know you're doing about 25?" I looked over, smiled, and acknowledged him, at which point he pulled in front and motorpaced me for a few hundred yards. He kept checking his mirrors and grinning while I was on his wheel - at which point he GUNNED it and pulled away. I jumped out of the saddle and started sprinting after him and caught up again as he'd come back down to the speed limit, again hugging his wheel with him continuing to look in his mirrors with a big ol' grin. As we came around a turn there were some people doing some work in their front yard. They looked up at the sound of the approaching Harley and the guy on the Harley waved his hand and pointed back to me with the gesture insinuating "Take a LOOK at this guy!" We chatted for a minute at a stop sign ahead for a while and parted ways. It totally made my night.

[QUOTE=operator;4360566]Who was that guy who had some guy in a Lexus drive up to him and tell him that "if you worked a little harder you might be able to afford this (the lexus)", then having our hero flash out his Mercedes benz keys and retort, "if you worked a little harder you might be able to afford this!".
QUOTE]
Actully happen to a friend & I. Some idiot in a toyota pulled up next to us at a light and remarked 'if you applied yourself, you might be able to afford on of these', and patted his dashboard. My buddy pulled out a key ring with both Lexus & Porsche keys and gave the retort "if you applied yourself you might be able to afford one of these".
Kinda hard to ride strong when you are laughing that hard.
My personal best came on a solo fall ride. I caught up with a heavily laden farm truck at a stop sign. When he pulled out, I jumped into his draft. It was a road I knew well, and I stayed with him until I ran out of gears, somewhere around 42 mph. As I dropped off onto the paved shoulder, there was the mini-van, complete with soccer mom & team in the back. The kids were going ballistic. I loved it.

while trying not to cause a traffic jam in downtown lex one saturday afternoon, i was in a sprint on a slight downhill, since i was trying to change lanes. finally got over, and the car behind me, a clk 550 mercedes (i think that was the model) yelled "you hit 32 man, nice" or something along those lines at the next light. i dont know that i was really going that fast, but it was nice to get props from a guy in a sports car.

Keep on climbing
One time I was doing Maine's MOOSA tour (Maine's Original Outstanding Super Adventure). We were riding towards Rangeley, which is up in the mountains in western Maine. The tour group got strung out all over creation on the climbs leading into Rangeley. Since I can climb fairly well, I was riding by myself with nobody else in sight. A car rolls up besides me and the guy rolls down the passenger window, looks at me and said "if this is a race, you have got a HUGE lead !". I didn't divulge that it wasn't a race, just shouted something about "awesome, thanks for the update !".
One of the best descents I've ever had was coming down the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway in Wyoming (near Cody). According to the sign up top, it's 12 miles at 7% grade. The only times you need the brakes are for a few cattleguard crossings; otherwise, just let it fly. I wasn't far into the descent when a car caught up to me; they just sat back a hundred feet or so without ever making an attempt to pass. When I finally reached the stop sign at the bottom he pulled up beside me and said "that was beautiful to watch you descend!" It's always nice when a motorist realizes that they can't descend any faster then a bicycle can and they have the sense to stay behind and out of the way.
I've had college students yell "nice ass!" to me in Altoona, Pennsylvania. I've had a female Ferrari driver yell "nice legs !" after I yelled "nice car !" to her.

Once I was riding up a local killer hill and near the crest a pickup with two construction workers pulled up beside me. The passenger leaned out and said "Sh#^, did you really go up that hill on your bike?" I proudly said, "It's actully the first time I made it up without stopping." The guy says, "Damn, you got some strong legs."
The fact that I actually made that hill in one shot made me happy enough, but to have witnesses.....priceless!

I got one, just from last week.
One local trail parallels a freeway (SR-520, Redmond to Bellevue, runs right past Microsoft). The trail and the freeway drop steeply from my house down into Redmond. You know what that means, right? I have a hell of a climb on the way back home after I've already been exhausted by a 20-30-40 mile ride.
Anyway, I was just at the beginning of the trail climb, where the on-ramps also enter the freeway. A group of 5-6 teens were all piled up in one POS car (old honda or something). They gave me dirty looks and a hmmph before they gunned their loud 4-cylinder engine and barely got up to speed uphill on the onramp. I started my climb too, and I meet the same kids at the top of the climb. They just got off the freeway I guess.
This time they gave me a wide eyed look and one of them pointed at me and said You Da Man!
That made my day.

Me and Starclimber were descending from the top of Mt. Baker, doing between 65-70km/h throughout the turns.... we came up to a couple of Harley riders who realized they were holding us back. They were nice enough to pull aside and let us through.
When they finally caught up to us on the flats, they gave us the thumbs up and wished us a nice ride back home.
