Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

fix or sell- decision

I have a Raleigh r-500 with shimano RSX (7 x 3)components. The right brifter is starting to go, it sometimes doesn't want to shift. I paid 175 for the bike used, changed out the rear cassette and put on a new chain. The question is should i just sell the bike for what i can get for it (maybe 175, bike is flawless outside of the brifter sometimes acting up) or change out the brifters, my lbs says they could do it for 100 for both as far as parts. I just hate dumping money into a bike that will never be all that great, when i can add 175 dollars on top of the money i get from the Raleigh and get something that will be newer and in better shape. There are often fuji newest 4.0's and specialized allez on criagslist in my area.

Every part that wears out you'll have to buy used, expensive NOS, or replace with low quality parts as 7 speed is now basically unsupported. You hub is spaced 126mm and will not take an 8-10 speed cassette, the 7 speed brifter you'll get is probably the same one they use on x-mart bikes, etc.

Sounds like for you sell is the better option.

Why don't you try blowing out the brifter with an air compressor or spraying a bunch of WD-40 into it? Sometimes you can coax a little more life out of those gummy shifters while you're saving up for a new ride.
