Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Older Trek 5200/5500/5900

Hey, everyone.

So I've been riding for a while and am really hoping to get another bike in the future to add to my collection. I have decided that I want my next bike to definitely be a Trek.

However, I really do not like the new geometries of their current line. The new Madones are probably really good rides, but they are just a bit too "blingy" for me. I am in love with the older, pre-Madone frames, especailly the non-curved top tubes.

I think I have my eyes set on either the 2002 or older Trek 5500 or 2001 or older Trek 5900. Does anyone know how much I should be expected to save if I want to get either of these bikes? Is it cheaper to just get the frame and build it up?

Thanks for the suggestions. Just to end this, I remember going to an LBS and asking about upgrades. All she said was that I would know when "it's time." I guess that time is coming soon...

Not sure about savings, but I would go with the frame, since componentry and gruppos have advanced a good deal since 01, 02. The 5900 was a very nice frame indeed, some consider that one to be Trek's best frame ever.

I have a 2001 5200, and I love it. I am in the process of upgrading it to current technology. It has Ultegra 6500. I want to go Red on it, and buy some new wheels. On ebay you can usually find the bikees already upgraded. I got mine stone stock off ebay for $1160shipped. The only thing I would trade it for, would be a Soloist Carbon, or a SLC-SL. I really do love these old bikes as well.
