Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Specialized Allez owner needs wheel help

Hi All
I came across this forum when I was searching for a new wheel for my recently acquired Allez. I was given the bike by colleague who no longer rode (mountain bikes and childseats for him now). I have never owned a road bike (due to the cost) and was delighted to receive the bike. My mate believes the bike is about 6 years old and he thought the back wheel was buckled.
Upon reading this forum I discovered people talking about wheels being out of true and broken spokes. I inspected the bike and found the spokes on the rear wheel are very flexible (does that mean loose?) and also at the point where the wheel rubs the frame I noticed a single broken spoke (broken at the hub).
A thread in this forum suggests that when a spoke breaks the wheel is no longer true (they are Mavic cxp 21 - or so it says on the stickers). So to my questions:

1. Would this broken spoke make the wheel appear buckled? (I assume that this is what is meant by out of true?)
2. Does "truing the wheel" mean that the wheel is tightened to ensure it is perfectly symetrical (ie round)
3. Can anyone confirm what I have read in threads here that most LBS's recognise that there is an issue with the Mavic cxp21's and often respoke them free?
4. If the LBS charges me for replacing the broken spoke, tensioning and truing how much could I expect to pay (I am in the UK)?
5. How do I tell what hubs I have as this seems to be a major factor (ie cxp 21's with Shimano or Richey hubs seem to be a common problem on here)?
6. Is there anyway to tell how old this bike actually is and what size and model?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help a newbie to the world of road biking

Regards
Rob

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Not heard of this one...
4. Not sure sorry, but a phone call would clear it up...call say you need a spoke repaired and the wheel trued. They should be able to shoot you a price on the phone.
5. Not sure..
6. Serial number on the bike....color options...post pic's and I bet someone can help out.

I am sure there will be other responces to fill in the gaps I let open...Congrads on the new bike. From what I understand the UK is a great biking country...and Welcome to the forum...
