Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If all you are getting is gloves, go to the local bike shop. Cost of shipping gloves will eat up any savings.

Yeah, I'd go to the bike shop. Different glove brands all fit differently and I find many very uncomfortable. Most mediums are too tight for me (my wife has a nice pair of Assos gloves thanks to that...) but I tried on some Louis Garneau mediums at a shop a while back and they were perfect. No way to know without trying them on...

I've gone through so many gloves i just gave up on them so this summer I'm going barehanded. Most thank palm padd and Gel based gloves tend to cause hand cramps for me so I am about to toss out 3 pairs of gloves I recently bought. So i'll go barehanded this summer unless I fork over some $$$ for a pair of Ralph Criterium gloves, https://www.rapha.cc/index.php?page=42 maybe they will work out ...
DZA_LA I have a new pair of PI Gel Vent gloves , LG ER GO air , and pair of Push winter gloves I could toss ya for free if you want to try them out if they work you can keep'em. just pm me

I was on a ride the other night and one of the guys had the Rapha Crit gloves. Badass. I'd never experienced glove envy before...

I have been using a pair of Nike gloves and I love them, so far they have lasted a little over a year and show no significant signs of wear.

Yep, try them on at your local bike shop. There are huge differences in fit, padding, insulation, comfort and aerodynamics that can be much better told by examining the gloves in person.

Once you find something you like, stick with the brand and go ahead and order subsequent pairs online.

On very long rides body pains related to posture and equipment can be far more debilitating than simple exhaustion. Spend some time finding the right pair if your hands can possibly be that point of failure.

Aerodynamics?

Gloves?

Huge differences?

Really?

(otherwise sound advice though, with which I heartily concur)

Seems strange I know but yeah, I would imagine so. Consider this:

* A perfectly ordinary pair of gloves with meshed backs and half-fingers splaying at the ends putting something ugly into the wind
* The MIT group claiming gloves over bare hands can be more of a drag cost than a front aero wheel could save
* Human skin is not great aerodynamically. Some materials offer aerodynamic advantages over bare skin

Even if the MIT group was slightly wrong, one might then surmise that the difference between full fingered gloves made of aerodynamic materials could offer substantial aerodynamic advantages over the normal, mesh-back clunky glove. The optimal glove would be made of thin aerodynamic directional materials with thumb and forefinger free and the other three fingers folded into the same glove "finger".

According to the MIT report, DrPete could probably cat up simply by putting on surgical gloves over his non-aero gloves. Hmmm?

Ok...granted, there may be a huge aerodynamic difference between your idealized TT glove and my PI gel lites, but I'm fairly certain that the OP wasn't shopping for a pair of those at REI. They were just trying to find a place to order a perfectly ordinary pair of gloves with meshed backs and half-fingers splaying at the ends putting something ugly into the wind.

And even if the differences in aerodynamics between the various brands of those perfectly ordinaries are not negligible (which I very much doubt), how in the world would they be able to tell the difference in an LBS?

I can't say much more. You and I both know that some gloves are probably much better than others. We can doubt the MIT boys are correct, I have before and reserve a little doubt, but we both know they have pretty decent brains and superior measurement tools.

If you feel the MIT group is not FoS then what can a rider do?

Well we can put some bits of fact together as I've done above and come up with some good guesses:

* Mesh backs are very probably very bad
* Poor half-finger fit is probably very bad
* Bulky or hanging clasps are probably bad
* Full fingered gloves probably reduce the risk of poor aerodynamics

Again these are just guesses based on the facts at hand. I'll be the first to admit I simply don't know what would work best.

I bought some Cannondale gloves, I think because one of the on-line stores had them on sale, and I've been pleasantly surprised. They've lasted over a year, even through repeated summer washings, and still look like they've got a lot of time to go.

And a big plus - they're not mesh backed. How do you use a mesh back to wipe off your upper lip?

Think it was about 6-7mo. I probably shortened their lifespan a bit so I'm likely being a bit unfair to them. They didn't have any of the BG gloves in my size at the LBS when I was shopping for the replacements so I bought the PIs. Might give them another shot when these wear out in a year.

LG ergo air gloves. I keep two or three pairs of gloves in rotation and wash them regularly by hand. Just got a pair of gloves with some gel pads in them; century ride tomorrow with 7600ft./climbing should be a good test.

You've convinced me. The next town sign sprint I lose, I'm blaming the gloves.

(all in good fun - the OP seems to be a sort of BF Rorschach Test. You see a request for the best possible glove including aero considerations, and I see a request for where to buy some decent comfortable plain ol' gloves - with maybe some need for suggestions as to what we find comfy. We both agree that the first stop should probably be the LBS. Once they've settled on a brand and size, then and only then would we consider advising to buy online).

Just got these- thin padding, no gel (hate gel), decent wiping surface, and comfy so far. I've been very happy with their other clothing.

I'm a fan of my PI Gel Vents and my Specialized BG gloves... I have to give the nod to specialized when spending more time in the drops, though.
