Caad7 R700 frame vs Caad8 R700 frame

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Caad7 R700 frame vs Caad8 R700 frame

Hi

Whats the difference between these two frames? Both say R700 but one says Caad7 (blue)and the other says Caad8(red) with different slightly design as well.

Thanks!

Redesigned seat stays that were lighter, primarily.

The frames. CAAD stands for Cannondale Advanced Aluminum Design and the number is the frame revision...the latest generation is CAAD9.

The R700 is (well used to be) Cannondale's model name and had no affect on the actual frame...just the component group. In other word's todays CAAD8 Optimo 2 (currently the bottom of the Cannondale racing bike line) is exactly the same frame that won the Giro just with different components and a different fork (the forks change with model level).

So back to your question CAAD7 vs CAAD8 there is very little difference. There was a change to the rear drop outs due to some failure in that area on the CAAD7 frame. There was also a slight change to the seat tube I believe and the CAAD8 is a few grams lighter (like 50g or something like that...not much). Both frames were at one time the top of the Cannondale line and both are very capable. CAAD9 is another slight variation with hydroforming of the TT and a widening of the down tube plus a slight change to the seat tube...it winds up being slightly lighter again and also slightly stiffer.

I think I have a 05 Caad7 frame with the 06 Caad8 components. Its my first road bike and I hope to try it out tomorrow.

Thanks very much for the clarification!

That is about as nice a bike as you will ever need (you may want nicer but that is another issue ). Just keep an eye on the little metal bridge at the rear dropout and the dropout itself. If you or the previous owner tend to ride a little rough they had a habit of cracking in that location...of course this would be a warranty issue if you ever have any problems.

Other than keeping an eye on it when you clean the bike don't worry about it, I have never seen one fail to the point someone got hurt...it was always a crack someone saw when working on the bike.

And don't let it fall over, I've heard stories of the top tube denting easily on the CAAD7 when mishandled. Other than that it's an awesome frame, I used to have it before I crashed it and replaced with a CAAD6.

Any light aluminum frame will dent if you let it fall over or drop a tool on it...
