Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Jumping off point

Well I am pretty new to the world of road bikes. I have been researching for awhile and am looking for the jumping off point to get me started. I was thinking about going the Dawes Lightning 1000 route, but from some of the posts here, I am thinking that just may not be the way to go now. I have started to look at used bikes and although I want modern parts on a bike I just don't think I am going to be able to do it with my $400 budget right now.

I know $400 is not much right now, but it is all I have to spend. I have been into the LBS and they just don't have anything in my price range used or new so I have been poking around on eBay. I have a lot of options there, but everything in my price range seems to involve a compromise of some sort.

Long story short I have my eye on this bike https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...7884&rd=1&rd=1 . I have no idea if an older Trek 1400 is a good jumping off point, so i thought I would get some feedback. Besides the white tape the only thing I really don't like about the bike are the shifters. Otherwise is this a good bike for a beginer to grow with? If I did get this bike what things do I need to take into consideration that I should do right away with it?

There are a lot of choices out there, I just want to make a good choice and then quickly get out on the rode and enjoy cycling.
