Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Spoke Breakage...

I'm currently busting a spoke a week... I'm getting the LBS building me up a wheel with a motorbike rim, 1" titanium rods and space shuttle parts... Okay, its a no-name indestructable rim and DT spokes, the spokes used on TANDEMS!! Damn that should be strong.

Yesterday morning I was weaving throught traffic on my morning commmute. I was trundling along real slow between traffic waiting at the lights. The lights went green and I accellerated through. At the foot of a short sharp hill I 'droped the hamer' and TWANG!! A spoke popped and the wheel flexed so far it began grinding into the chainstay!! I ground to a halt in the middle of the lane, hopped off and walked the bike to the side of the road rather embarassed.

Seriously I've done 6 spokes in 6 weeks. 2 of them were on the LBS 'loaner' wheel - the one that no-one ever breaks. The LBS guys were pissed off and amused. I don't hit pot holes, I'm 87kilo's... Maybe I am a sprint God....

Any of you guys break spokes like crazy and how have you stemmed the tide of wheel damage?

I'm betting DS rear spokes. What kind of wheel was this? (rim depth, spoke count, lacing pattern)

My rear wheel is a popular tandem wheel (36h Deep V), and I race on it. It's fine, and I'm not breaking any spokes.

Well, he's got both. Still probably a tension issue, not really a problem with your weight and power.

That would be my guess too. I'm betting that a well built wheel using good, but not exotic, components will solve his problem.

How old is the rear wheel? Could be fatigue.
