Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't even know where to start adjusting

The saga with my Fuji continues....

so after a poorly alligned derailer (from the shop) caused my freehub to go bad... I took it to the shop friday before last... they kept the bike and said they would fix the wheel ( warranty work).

So I waited a week (to last friday) and then called to get a progress report... a mechanic and a sales guy told me it would be done by 5...

so I took the 50 minute haul to the bike shop.. only to find the head mechanic give me a blank stare and say "we haven't even ordered the part yet. I can go ahead and do that, but it will be a week before it gets here and another week till we can fix it."

needless to say, they gave me a new wheel and I took the bike home.

but now, it is 50 times worse than before. I cannot trust my bike to propel me forward safely.

Shifting is incredibly difficult. the way it works is, I push the lever, and the chain stumbles down the cassette until one of the cogs grabs hold of it, and then over about a 5 minute time-span, it slowly (and very randomly) clicks it's way back up to the gear it was supposed to be at in the first place.

I was going up a hill, standing up because there was a car behind me that could not go around... so I was crunching pretty hard.... All of a sudden it jumps a ring (just like normal) and my pedals lock.... of course this freaks me out cause I assume the chain is about to fall off, and I'm going to do a ball plant into the top tube.

So I stop pedaling and sit back down.......my seat collapses..... wonderfull. have you ever tried to clip out of your pedals, with a frozen crank shaft, and no seat?

yeah it's no fun.....

so I 've seen websites telling me how to adjust my derailers, but I don't know where to start... can you guys give me any tips?

thanks!

Parktool will get you back on track. I had a bent derailleur hanger, that I bent back in place, but then my shifting was all out of whack. I used the Parktool intructions, and now it's dead on! Read and follow the instructions carefully, and you'll be good to go. Here's the link: https://parktool.com/repair/byregion.asp?catid=53

Find a new bike shop, they sound like real clowns there.

How does a poorly aligned derailleur cause a freehub to go bad? Makes no sense to me, and I fix bikes for a living....

How old is this bike? Is it well maintained, or does it get "run hard and put away wet"?

Were I a cartoon character, there would be question marks circling my head right now.

+1 on a new LBS

That poor shifting is probably cable tension. This issue seems to come up a lot around here ... that park tool link should get you back on track (probably just a simple cable adjuster turn to get the RD shifting properly again).

I don't know... that is just what i was told...I thought it made since because the guy adjusted the rear derailer on monday, I rode it tuesday and thursday noticing a very loud grinding noise, and took the bike in on friday and they said the freehub went bad.... I no longer have the grinding noise with the new wheel.

the bike is 1 months old now. It is a Fuji Roubaix RC that has been kept indoors, and only been ridden in perfect sunlight.

It only has probably 10 hours on it... after litterally EVERY SINGLE RIDE i've had to take it to the shop because something fell off.. or because of weird grinding noises etc.

If you brought your bike to me, the first thing that I would do would be to check the derailleur hanger alignment. I have no reason to think that's the problem but, if the hanger alignment is bad, no amount of effort with other adjustments will ever fix it.

Once I was satisfied that the hanger was straight, I'd disconnect the shift cable from the derailleur. Then I'd start readjusting the rear derailleur following the Park Tool step-by-step directions from the very beginning. My bet is that'll fix it.

Oh, and I totally agree with Bikewise1. Poor derailleur adjustment doesn't cause freehubs to fail.
