Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How much do you think the frame alone weighed? I am still trying to get a good feel for frame weight vs component weight vs wheel weight.

Old guy's custom steel..

...built for me by Paul Taylor using Columbus Life tubing. A sweet, sweet bike that keeps the smile on my face.

Sorry - didn't bother to weigh it by itself. It's a 20+ year old steel frame so it's probably not as light as today's stuff, but it was a high end frame for it's time period.

This is my 80s FAGGIN rebuilt and repainted.
Had some Ultegra 10-spd laying around, used the f/r derailleurs and brakeset coupled with Shimano 600 cranks and downtube shifters.

The black road frame was made with 2009 Columbus SL. The Track was made with Dedaccai.

It's even got the funky Dunlop steel rims, which I'll probably keep on it against my better judgement. And what look to be very ancient tyres
which i shall prudently ditch in favor of something less dangerous.

Anything special I should beware of in the strip and overhaul, or just the usual cottered shenanigans ?

Just to stay on topic, here's a recently revived California made Masi:

There is nothing too surprising about working on a 50's Raleigh save for the proprietary threading and cottered cranks... if you pull the cranks make sure you get the good cotters from Bikesmith.

If it has EA1 rims the tyres can be a little hard to find, the steel rims are not anything to write home about although the stainless Dunlop wheels are marvelous... Schwinn also made the S6 which is the same 597mm tire and Kenda still makes a replacement. If they are 26 by 1/38 (590) the tyre choices get better and the bike could be converted to run the 590mm wheel size and then I'd lace up some nice alloy hoops (like CR18s).

Besides that, you will need Bowden cables for the brakes if you have to replace them... the lines and housing are a single unit with heads at both ends.
