How long till the novelty wears off?
Hey all,
Just posting to say how fun road biking is! I used to ride my mountain bike once every week/fortnight, but ever since getting my road bike, I've been going for rides pretty much daily, so much more fun to ride at the moment. Can't wait to finish class each day to go for a ride. Every time I get home from a ride I say 'Tomorrow will be my rest day', but it never happens.
Anyway, just sharing my enthusiasm and wondering how often you guys ride now compared to when you first started riding?
Cheers,
Dan

My first real year riding I rode about 1,100 miles and thought that was really something. The next few years I rode around 3,000 to 3,500 miles. That was 1990 and the next few years after.
Last year I finally broke the 4k mark and had 4,300 miles. This year my original goal was 5k miles, but I've changed that to 6k miles given I've had a good year so far.
It's like a drug ...err addiction. What better addiction to have though! Ride and enjoy!

I ride 6-7 days a week and I seem to maintain a constant level of enthusiasm about cycling. However, my reasons for cycling fluctuate. I used to be a BMXer and when I got back into cycling after a 10 year hiatus, it was more about the freedom of getting out on the road alone and realizing the incredible distances that you can actually go on a bike. Then I really got into the idea of commuting 5 days a week no matter what the weather. I continue to commute to this day, and my commute rides are usually fast and serious workouts. Then I got into fixed gears a lot and that kept me going. After a while the novelty of a fixed gear wore off and I started getting back into road bikes, although I continue to ride the fixie a lot too. Slowly, as I started buying better equipment and building multiple bikes, at lot of my interest shifted to my new toys and fussing around with parts and bike setup. Now that I'm mostly satisfied with my bikes, I'm getting more and more interested in pushing my strength, speed, and endurance to the limits. Lately I've been thinking about BMX racing again...maybe eventually I'll come full circle, but road cycling will probably always be a major component of my cycling, because frankly, its way more convenient and way faster(!) than other types of cycling.

It hasn't worn off since 1989 for me. But I will keep you posted.

If the novelty has worn off for somebody, they probably wouldn't be posting in BF.

Mine will when they put my cold dead body in the ground. Heck, I may have them bury my bike with me.

The novelty does ware off, but that depends which you think is more severe: bankrupcy or mortality.
as far as riding...now I get more annoyed if I can't ride for some dumb reason like work, but especially if I can't ride to work. ...d@mn the weather was nice yesterday!

Sometimes, I feel like I get worn out, or tired of riding. So, I take a little time off. After finishing my Powerbar, I get back on.

I did not ride for about 25 years then decided obesity was not for me so dragged a bike out of the shed and started riding. That was 4 years ago. I'm over it now. Until tomorrow.

I was out on a 20 miler yesterday, and thinking, "This is sooo much fun! I just LOVE IT!!".
Of coarse, I've been thinking the same thing occasionally, while riding, for over 22 years.

I rode about 6k miles last year(first full year of cycling) and about 6k thus far this year. It dosen't wear off, it only gets better. When you start a 20-30 miles ride is a great epic adventure and as you go it becomes a warm-up.

OP - my daily schedule - work, family, recreation, home, meals, etc. - is all basically built around planning for my 'next ride.' There are priorities that come before riding, that's for sure. Family obligations, job, church, almost always come before riding, but that's exactly why I plan so hard and look ahead to find those windows of time (an hour or two, 5-6 times a week) that let me get out on the bike. And it's been that way (on and off a couple of times) for 25 years.

3 years into it and I am an even more addicted. When bored I purchase new clothing, upgrades, go exploring, etc.
The OP picked the worst possible sport for addicts such as us.

+1 on the forced rest days. Given a chance I would ride myself into the ground.

I keep getting faster, and being the competative type I am, I see no reason to quit until I'm the fastest person in the world. Since that will never happen I see a lifetime of cycling for myself.
