Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Jersey Zipper Thread

How long is your jersey zipper? What do you prefer?

All my jerseys are full zip as it is easy to take off and put on. I don't understand why manufacturers still make jersey with half zips. Enlighten me.

I hate full zips. It disrupts the drape of the garment. Really.

All but one of my jerseys are 3/4 zip. My only full zip is amazingly cool and light, I can take it off so easy whereas with the 3/4 I have to wrestle it all the way.

Manufacturers pay more for l-o-n-g zipper than for short ones . . . economic$$$$!

Jerseys with short zippers are far more comfortable, and let's not even start talking about the obvious weight savings...

I love my full zips even though the best jersey I own is 3/4. It's just a pain to get off.

There's really no point for me to have long zippers.

And I'm puzzled by the comments about jerseys with short zippers being difficult to get off. You are able to remove pullovers and T-shirts, right?

full zip makes me have tummy penis', but it sure is nice to be able to unzip it fully on a long climb.

Try a tighter fitting race cut instead of the looser club cuts.

What's wrong with long zippers? I love them!!! I have one jersey with half zip that I got rid of, just hate taking it off.

Doesn't solve the problem, but I don't mind it being there.

Cold up there in Canada, isn't it? Colder than . . . colder than a well-diggers a$$ in the Klondike, colder than a witch's tit in a brass bra, colder than . . . ah, my Fairbanks High School memories fail me. The deal is that us guys are total stud muffins who wear jerseys so tight that you can check out our 6-packs through them. When we are really wasted and sweaty after a hard ride, we can cramp and become totally inoperative in the terrible struggle to remove our jerseys before going in the pub for a beer. What we need is help getting that jersey off. I can usually get my jersey off OK, but I always know the ride wasn't too bad if I can get my shorts changed in the car without cramping.

What always amazes me is how these pros can reconnect and zip up their full zip jerseys while riding no-hands in the red zone at the top of some long Alpine climb. There's probably some special sponsor's training camp they go to where they teach them the technique.

Being able to fully unzip on long hot climbs is worth paying extra for full zip.

I hate half-zips. I like 3/4 zips. I only have one full-zip and I bought it on clearance during this last winter so I'll vote again one it gets hot.....and I lose enough weight to wear it....

The cold is certainly a factor. But I also have to wear something under my jersey anyway, so zip or no zip it makes no difference. In fact, I'd have to say that on most of my rides, I wear polypro or wool tops with NO zippers. It has to be really warm before I venture out in short sleeves.

The only time I've had trouble getting out of my clothes at the end of a ride was at the end of my 300K the weekend before last. My shoulder had stiffened up so much (and I've got such limited movement with that arm right now anyway) that I couldn't move it into a position where I could remove my tops.

Well it appears that the full metal jacket zip is winning.

Think of all that extra tonnage of material that's being unnecessarily carted around due to the dramatic increase in weight of 7 inches of plastic zipper.

Why is it we love full zippers? I know I do, I just always thought it was for reasons other (non-fat) guys could agree with as well...

I actually cut all the zippers out of my clothing to reduce the weight.

As a woman, I have no need for full zips. And frankly it could be "dangerous" if I get a bit overzealous with the unzipping on a hot day.
