Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1 For that matter, what cause is NOT better than the war. Anyway, it's a drag reading about the man. Pegoretti is a middle-aged man, very sad news for anyone, any age but.... Thanks for the news.

Um I love the look of the Pegoretti bikes and feel for the family but how the hell can you make this a political issue when the guy did it to himself by chain smoking?

I hope he gets well, I am sorry there isn't a cure for cancer but the US or any other govt didn't stick all of those cigs in his mouth.

Wasn't everyone concerned with Dario Pegoretti possibly seeking to commit suicide a couple years ago? Did he emerge from that dark chapter of his life?

Lots of people lead healthy lifestyles and get cancer. He has lymphoma, not lung cancer, it could happen to anyone.

Smoking has been linked to more than just lung cancer...Pegoretti didn't lead a healthy lifestyle.

Actually cigs were standard issue in WWII. The tobbacco companies donated 'em, and Uncle Sam put them in the rations... they didn't force anybody, but take a kid in a stressful situation, give him some smokes and tell him it relieves tension... they got a generation of good pack-a-day customers out of the deal. Sad.

Suggesting one deserves to contract a lethal disease because they practice high risk behaviors says far more about the commentator’s attitudes than any worthwhile commentary on the subjects. As when folks suggest that HIV infection is the fault of Gay lifestyle or being a drug addict… I struggle with whom to pity more. I hate tobacco, not users; humanity is far to dynamic to generalize about ones motives, especially when we do things that may harm us habitually. These folks deserve our compassion. (Has judging an addict ever helped them to stop?) I have never met Dario, however we are passionate about the art of bicycles, and we are both addicts, that makes him far more common to me than some folks with judgmental comments. To be touched by his work is to be connected to him. Yes, get well! Blessings.

Smoking doesn't cause lymphoma, and depending on the type of lymphoma, there is a cure. Perhaps you should know what you're talking about before passing judgment.

When I first saw post #2 I thought 80Vette was really dumb. Then I see the original post had a political commentary later edited out. So this 80Vette guy is just regular old dumb, I guess. I mean the connection to cycling is pretty obvious even with an Iraq reference.

+ mucho to Rocke. Sympathy is (should) not be conditional. My brother recently passed due to lung cancer. By any lifestyle measure he certainly contributed to his demise. Doesn't mean he "deserved it" though and certainly doesn't diminish the loss. Even if Dario's lifestyle contributed to this he'll still be grieved for by family/friends who won't sit around assigning blame if his fight is ultimately unsuccessful.

He has my best wishes and prayers.

I was perusing Cycles Bikyle (the shop where I was fitted for a Marcelo) and ran across this:

heh...thats pretty funny 'grasshopper'.........Thats like saying (god forbid) you get squashed by a soccer mom while riding your bike, and instead of the condolences to your family from your demise, someone says you did it to yourself for riding your bike.

Not to mention the fact that the govt. or the bike manufacturers did'nt exactly make you ride your bike!!

...so c'mon man, you can do better than that!
