Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Truing Stand

I'm looking for a real cheap (but accurate) truing stand. Anyone know if this one's any good?

Spin Doctor Truing Stand II

I assume it'll be good for any road wheels?

Real cheap and accurate, have been looking for that for some time. Decided to find a cure for cancer and solve world peace instead.

The truing stand just holds the wheel as you true it. Having the best of the best truing stand will not help you get your wheels any truer. As long as its not a flimsy POS it will work just fine.

This is very similar to the Minoura Workman stand. I have that one. Wile not as easy to use as some of the better Park stands, it is much cheaper. As long as you are willing to take more time, it will work just fine. You will have to flip the wheel around once or twice as it is not a self centering stand. Or even better is also buy a dishing tool to check with out of the stand.

Yes, I recently bought one of these and it's well worth the money. It is lightweight, and you have to take more care using it than a heavy weight model. If you are doing lots of wheel building and truing, I'd advise getting a heavier and more expensive model, but this is great for occasional use and miles better than truing wheels on the bike using a brake pad as a guide.

The instructions are good and should be read regardless of your level of experience.

Road wheels work great.

Will a dishing tool really work that well? If I can get the wheel trued using that, then it's a great price. Are there any concerns/issues with using a dishing tool?

+1 they'll work, plus you can move them around the house easily. I've built a half-dozen wheelsets sitting mindlessly with sports on in front of the tube.

edit - I don't use a dishing tool w/the Minoura

A dishing tool, while not absolutely necessary is a good thing to have with an inexpensive non-self centering truing stand. It can be used to gauge the effectiveness of your eyes and the stand to make sure the rim is actually centered. they are very easy to use and take less time than flipping the wheel over and over to make sure it's centered.
