Question on headset options

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question on headset options

I need to start this by saying that I am a noob to road bikes but trying to learn quick!

Okay I just purchased a used bike and I want to change the headset on it. The bike is a Cannondale R400and it has an adjustable stem on it that I can't stand. I am on a business trip so I am not in front of the bike. What I am trying to figure out is if anyone knows by looking at this stem if it is threaded or not. I am trying to figure out what kind of stem I need to replace it with.

Here is the pic

So my only option is to use a threaded stem to replace it or replace the fork right?

You pointed out it was threaded on a threadless stem. If I want to change everything out without going the nachbar route I would need to purchase a new head set, fork and stem correct?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of going the nasbar route. I am not going to racing so should I not worry about it?

If you want to keep your existing fork then your best best is a quill stem. You can get an extender and then go threadless but if it were me and I wanted to go threadless I would just get a new (uncut) fork.

I don't have the bike in front of me so I am not sure of this but since this is a Cannondale R400 would it take a 1" stem or a 1 1/8 stem if I was going to go the quill route.

Threadless stem adapter is the way to go. Have them on 2 bikes. Allows change of stem if you find you need to change or upgrade.
