Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike advice needed!

I posted this in clydes also, hope it's ok to post here also for additional feedback--thanks!!

O.K. I tried a few bikes yesterday! I'm 6'4" and 220# - 42yrs old. basically I've replaced my running with cycling and i think i've caught the bug!

Well, riding wise I'm doing about 80-100miles/week but I can see me doing only a little more;possibly 120-140 at the most.

Anyways, I tried the Cannondale Caad8 optimo 1 (105 group), (shimano wh-550 wheelset)---- 1350

Bianchi - Nirone (alumn hydroform frame), shimano tiagra-group -----999

Cannondale carbon 1 -- carbon frame - ultegra group--shimano wh-561 wheelset----------2500

I wanted to ride some different bikes to experience the difference in price range and components and frame material.

Being the size that I am and the fact that I like to mash it alot and sometimes also go for longer rides, what types of bikes would you recommend that that I take for a spin next!

price range is 1500ish and my main riding preferences are some faster riding but also being able to do a century here and there!

Also, do I need to have special wheel built up to hold up for my weight?

thanks for the input!!!

Trek Pilot 5.0, Giant OCR Composite, Cannondale Synapse, or Specialized Roubaix would all offer you a more upright riding position and good all day riding comfort. I (48 years, 6'1" and 210lbs) have Shimano WH-550R wheels and they have given me zero trouble but some report less than favorable experiences. You might want to consider a more traditional, higher spoke count wheel which is what I wish I had done originally despite not having any problems in 2,000 miles. I personally chose a Serotta Fierte steel bike with carbon fork because I am used to steel. I also got a great deal, all-Ultegra for $1,900 and the Giant OCR Composite that I was also test riding had a non-Ultegra crank/chain ring and would not shift properly during the test ride. It was a hectic Labor Day sale and I had been looking at bikes for awhile and went with the Serotta. No regrets so far other than I wish I had taken the time to substitute higher quality wheels. This will undoubtedly be my first upgrade or component replacemnt. Considering additional wheel set so that I have a backup.
