Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Changed out my bars to bullhorns on the SS so went for a little 15 mile test ride. Found out I forget to reinstall the computer on the bars.

edit: forgot to add that I love the bullhorns.

Missed my normal Saturday morning group ride ... crap weather. Cleared up today at about noon ... partly sunny 80 degrees, little wind. Went by myself on a 35 mile loop from Peoria to Princeville. Since I'm on the tail end of a head cold I told myself I'd ride it easy and enjoy the cornfields and country roads.
Averaged 16.8 mph ... pretty good for me when riding by myself ... all-in-all a great time.

Solo century, that makes two on two consecutive Sunday's. Todays ride was hillier and faster than last week. Ride was actually only 99.5 miles door-to-door, so I had to ride once around the block when I got home to make up the difference. Total mileage was 100.14 just over 6 hours.

13 miles...then some small rain showers started...

"Passing on the left" - seems to backfire for me...had 2 people jump in front of me...I announced starting at 55+ yards away from them and said it several times ;( had to lock the brakes and left some nice skid marks when trying to avoid one of these space cadets....

When you say passing on the left they have to think which one is left and then they bob from left to right...

When the 1st one happened I said to myself maybe I was target locking but then I noticed that I was still on the left side of the path which indicates I wasn't.

I had people riding 2 bikes side by side and weaving to the point where I had to slow down because I knew for sure they were going to take me out if I tried to pass in the middle.

I'm not an expert bike rider and I just got into it 1.5 months ago but I don't pretend to be an expert.

I saw this couple and I remembered seeing them somewhere else. It was at the LBS when I had my bike tuned up for the season. I overheard them at the LBS. They were looking to buy some road bikes and said that they were new and never road a road bike. The shop sold them 2 Trek 1500s and they were on the way. Well today I saw them. I always try to look and see what shoes/pedals people are using. I myself am riding flat platforms for 2 reasons. 1) where I ride you take your life in your hands and 2) the only clipless I've used are the Welgo Look style which are quite bad according to a lot of people on the net and my experience. Being that I'm also new at this also makes it more difficult. I played with the welgos for 2 hours trying to adjust them...but you cannot tune garbage (LBS agreed they had 5 pairs they used as decorations for the front door and the pedals looked nearly new...I was told that people gave the pedals to the LBS for free due to their quality...some of their other pedals may be better...I can say that the welgos have a small cheap hex bolt and the real Look pedals have a nice beefy tunning bolt...anyway getting back to the couple....they are decked out in full gear team Discovery and all that...running on soft shoes and flat platforms...I'm new to this biking culture but I can spot someone who is trying to be a poser...I figured if you were for real you'd be rolling on some speed plays or Egg beaters, LOOK, SPD...I only say this because I feel that I try to reflect the image of what I am....I ride in regular running shorts and blue (nothing on it) shirt....I ride a Fuji Roubaix but don't pretend to be something I'm not...

I rode 35 miles on the "Bike the Drive" event in Chicago. First 10 miles were a little drizzly.

It was all enjoyable. About the only thing unpleasant about riding in the rain is when the socks and shoes get soaked.

Did a century with the Colts Neck independent group...
Actually it was 111.2 miles in just under 6 hours for 18.7 mph with 3384 ft of climbing.

Didn't plan to do this.. since I did the montauk Century last sunday and put 3 hard rides of 40+ miles each this week, including yesterdays with 1800 ft of climbing. We didn't go out last night, so i figured since i was getting some sleep I should make the attempt to do the century... The last 30 miles was at 21-25 mph and really tough. Thanks to the group for dragging my butt home...

103 miles, 16.1 rolling average. Flat to rolling terrain. First century of the year. Was fading pretty rapidly from mile 60 to high-70s, but then my friend spindog got a flat, we took an extended break to fix that, and I felt great from then on in. First time I've been glad a flat occurred!

A quick 30 from the house to the National Zoo. Varied terrain with some decent rollers and 1 or 2 hills. Great weather.

Raced; did not crash and did not finish last. Also did not win, but for me, that is okay at this stage. Beautiful day.

Hmm? I thought they were standard issue Ultegras? I don't know what the barrels do... I turn them and they don't seem to adjust the cable reach at all...

I believe they are barrel adjusters to tighten or loosen the cables...

Easier to reach during a ride than under the down tube...

Did my first race today, an 8 lap, one mile per lap crit. I got 6th out of 19, so I thought it was pretty good for a first race. The hill at the end of the 8th lap did me in as my legs were just not in it.

34 miles east/west out and back with strong winds from the south...felt like it was in my face both ways. Three straight days of rain in Houston though, and the only dry hours are 6am to 11am, so I've done the same ride three days in a row. Going to take a trip north tomorrow and put in 60.

Well....since I did my ride on the 26th....it still counts.

A ride to santa cruz. 60 miles. 28 miles up hill (to 2900 feet) 25 miles downhill. 6 and a little of rolling hills. 4 hours including a 30 min stop at fjord's frosty shop for the nastiest chili burger I've ever tasted

The gear
specialized (Has anyone else noticed that if you painted the i and z red you'd have a very SPECIAL bike?) tarmac comp triple
105 drivetrain
mavic aksium wheelset
2 liters of water
frame pump
u-lock (HEAVY >_<)
change of clothes
flip flops

I noticed them, but I was referring to how long they are. Looks like you could take out about six inches.

Woke up to moron kids on the roof of the moron high school across the street shrieking and wailing their moron heads off. It's the judo and volleyball or badminton clubs... they start at 9 AM and don't stop until 5 PM, even on weekends and holidays. It's incredibly selfish and inconsiderate of them to be doing this, considering the school is in the middle of a residential area and all. There oughtta be a law. Peaceful nation my a$$.

I got on my bike and decided to ride until I found a quiet place. I did my usual route up the Yamato and Ishi rivers, then went up Mt. Kongo as far as I could. About 35 km out, I found a nice quiet spot. I would've gone farther but ran out of water. The descent was fast and fun until a big line of cars slowed things down. 70 km total, great ride! Also did a 50 km ride on Saturday, so my 13 km commute this morning was quite painful (hey, I'm still sort of new at this).
