Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrade Old Bike?

Ok. I ride an old 1984 centurion accordo. I'm ready to upgrade, but is it even worth installing a new, modern drivetrain or would I be better off looking for a newer used bike in good condition or buyin a new one? Any specific recommendations for the upgrade if I should do it? I need help this bike is DATED!

The Accordo was not made from top of the line tubing, Tange #2 or lower, so spending a lot of money to upgrade is not good economy. You're also starting with a freewheel rear hub, so basically everything in the drivetrain on that bike would need replacing. I have and ride older bikes, so I'm not anti-vintage.

Welcome to BF, by the way. The C&V subforum is a good place for that ride.

Ya...I'm not anti - vintage, but I do object to my main bike being older than me. It's a good bike though - I keep it well mantained and it usually behaves

also, how much do you think it would cost to upgrade the whole drivetrain to shimano sora or campagnolo xenon or mirage?

OK.... i checked it out through probikekit and I could get the whole tiagra drivetrain (including wheels and brakes) for about $390 + s&h. That's not bad. Probably not worth it on the accordo, but not bad. Thanks for the link.
