Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is this noise?

Had my first road bike for 10 days. Love turning my head to the side and hearing the smooth hiss of the wheels on the tarmac as I'm used to my old bike which sounds like a First World War tank.

I want to avoid my new bike turning into a tank. I've noticed in the last few days that there is now a very slight clicky whirring sound coming from my cassette when I'm pedaling - it's not the louder noise that I've heard when the chain is crossed. I am guessing the sound is due to particles of dirt and grit already attacking my bike - correct?

Is there an online guide to bike cleaning that somebody could recommend? I could find one myself, but how would I know a good one when I see it? Besides that, I like posting on bike forums. Hope this post deserves a response.

Sounds to me like your new bike is breaking in - IOW's, the der cable is stretching (normal) and just needs an adjustment. Typical new bike stuff.

Check out the Park Tool website for good maintenance tips or take it back to where you purchased it for an adjustment.

No, not campy, botto.

Thanks for Park Tools and suggestions, this will be good reading while I'm at "work". My lbs will do a free service from 4-6 weeks after purchase. I think I will try to find a bike maintenance book as well, which will be easier to carry up to the garage than my Mac on a 200m extension cable.
