Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Off Day Thread.

I did a 40 mile recovery ride on Wednesday. Yesterday, my ride was only 35 miles due to cramping and extreme fatigue. My legs felt as if they were so full of blood that something was about to pop - literally. They were (and still are) hard to the touch even though I'm not flexing.

One of the worst feeling rides I've ever had.

There's no such thing as a 40-mile recovery ride.

NO RIDE....take it easy days are sometimes the hardest damn things to do I think.

Like right now...
I should just stay in and rest.

It's cloudy outside....looks ugly....wet from rain overnight.

But I'm here looking at radar loops on the net to determine if that's just drizzle or real rain....should I go out and just ride a recovery ride or not? Am I being silly about this....just rest for cryin' out loud. Why is this so difficult?

I need to make up my mind within 30 minutes...hmmmm.

Cypress....lets just go ride!

I'm skipping a BBQ/bonfire this evening to throw 4 hours on the legs. Birthday party in the woods tomorrow means no bike ride on a Saturday.

How about the off week...

After 2 19 hours weeks and then 4 days of racing I went out Tuesday to our local training crit, took a solo flyer cramped after 2 laps. Don't ride Wednesday or Thursday instead drink heavily, 20 mile ride today to get my legs going again then 8 hours this weekend.

Strange things happen in the woods...no ride because you'll no longer be able to sit on the saddle?

I had to miss last night and I have a TT tommrow. I REALLY want to go out and hit it hard tonight but I can't. Maybe I could go out for a Cypress-style light spin for 60 or something... you know, just to open up the legs.

Can't ride a road bike in the high mountains. I'll be up there from 9am Saturday until late morning Sunday.

Still too cold to ride before 10 am.

I agree, that is what I did yesterday. If the wife is along it forces it to be a recovery day.
I would not have traded yesterday for anything. It was a great day to ride together.
I don't think she would call it a recovery day though.....

My recovery day was just like BHR's. I caught a guy and he and I just bs'ed the whole time. Got out of the saddle maybe twice due to hills.

Blah, so Tuesday I had a great freaking day at the Crit (check my race report thread for details), and Wed I went out for an easy 35 mi spin. By mile 30 I was so hungry I could hardly push a pedal. That was a bad day. Then yesterday I was all set for intervals after work and my car broke down I did not ride. I really need to get there intervals in, but it seems like something comes up every day I try. Screw it, tomorrow I'm doing some.

It's interesting, but compared to my first racing years, I never have off days now that I'm only riding 6 hrs/week. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I used to have off days every couple weeks. Now, I'm ready to roll every day.
