Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Frames

I am looking to build a nice enry level road bike. Are there any websites that offer reduced-cost or reasonable bike frames? I have found a couple but I do not want to order off a website not recomended.

Thanks

I may be out of line here, but I suspect an assembly plant that buys components in bulk, and has trained staff slapping parts on frames all day, can put an entry level bike together a lot cheaper than you can, even after markup.

True. Even scrounging USED parts on scambay $450 + cost of frame at a minimum. Add in your time and cost of any tools you don't have. Unless you want to make a hobby of building up bikes, buy already built.

I built up a really nice riding "rain / commuter / errands" bike off of a Soma Double Cross frame. There are a couple on-line retailers that sell the various Soma frames.

As others have said, building your own bike isn't necessarily the cheap way to go. It sure is fun though.

I wanted to build up a bike, but it was just not cost effective.

If you don't mind having a garage full of junk and tinkering, you could try to grab a few $10 garage sale specials, and build a frankenbike out of the best salvageable compatible parts.

Pick up the cheap Nashbar road frame and look for a used 105 group on Ebay.
