Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

suprised at the beach

So me and the wife take an overdue vacation to the beach, the Outer Banks NC, being from tennessee I just cant wait to do some flat land riding so I get my F90 stuffed in the back of the Buick and away we go.
The area we are staying has looooong stretches of protected land with small towns along the way, 20 to 30 miles of nothing but sand dunes/ocean on one side and wet lands on the other. So I head out early, 6:30 in the morning, heading towardCape Hatteras island, oh this great! so this is what riding without constant hills is like!
I'm having a great time, 18/20 mph steady pace, I pass a guy, later one passes me, we speak and keep at our own pace, this is wonderful! diggin on the ocean, not a sign of civilazation for miles, just enjoying being on the bike, legs pumping, life is good, ok, I got 10 in, lets head back, turn around and Holy S**t!!, I'm pedaling into a steady 12 to 15 mph headwind that a few minutes ago was a blissful tailwind, D**n!!!!
Man is this gonna be a long 10 miles, so now this is an easy cruise turned into hard ride, well I make it back alright, jump in the pool and life is still good.
Next morning, we ride into the wind for the first leg!

I tried to ride back from False Cape State Park, on the Atlantic border between VA and NC, after a weekend of camping and we had 35mph wind gusting to over 50. With a back pack on my back I was blown over and sand blasted for an hour and 45 minutes. Needless to say the wife was not happy durring that ride! The only good thing about the wind is it keeps the summer heat down.

i've got a local loop i ride here in indiana and i swear that no matter what direction the wind is blowing or even if there's any wind at all, it's always blowing through a low and wide gulley i ride through near the end of the loop. no matter what the wind is doing elsewhere, it's always blowing south-to-north through there. i'd do the loop in reverse, but the rest is just not as fun that way. it used to immediately knock 5-7 mph or more off my speed as i rode into it, but i've been winning lately. as i get more familiar and stronger, i'm able to hold my speed through there much better. i'm worn out when i get to the end if it, but there's a short hill and a long gradual downhill just after it as a nice reward...

looking forward to experienceing the costal winds around myrtle beach in a week (6/10-16). i'll hopefully be able to log some good morning miles before the sun is too far up or the wind is up as well.

have fun,
aaron

X2.

I ride along the Indian River 3-4X/week. The wind is a constant. Usually out of the East but when there's tropical systems around it can and does come from all directions. SW today which means no real tailwind.

Beats the hell out of snow though....
