Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

19 years since last crash

It was a good long run but it came to an end on my Sunday morning ride. Was just going to do an easy 20 mile ride so I could spend time with the family today. Was about 10 miles into the ride had just taken a drink from the water bottle and was putting it back. The bottle slipped out of my hand and went directly into my spokes and lodged between the the spokes and the fork. Needless to say with one had on the bars and the other not I went down. I now have some nice road rash on my elbow and a bit on my ankle, and a few scrapes down my right side. The worst part is my hip, I hit hard on my right side and when the adrenalin rush ran out I could start to feel it. It was a slow easy long 10 mile ride back home.

The good news is the bike is OK. Of course it was the first thing I checked out to see if it was OK to ride (forgot the cell phone at home). The only damage appears to be superficial, scuffs on my bar tape, seat, pedal, and rear derailleur may have gotten dinged. Most of the damage happened to me. I will be taking it into the shop to have them look it over to make sure nothing is wrong. Was hard to tell on the ride home since I think I was a bit out of alignment from the crash. I checked it over good when I got home and could see no signs of damage to the frame.

I had been wanting to get a new helmet and now I must get one since I cracked this one when my head hit the ground. This was not the way I wanted to get a new one. Helmets may not be the most stylish piece of gear, but it saved me from a trip to the hospital.

My helmet is a Giro and I know they have a crash replacement credit they will give sometimes, has anyone ever taken advantage of this? and what sort of a credit did they give you?

It looks like I will be off the bike for a few days since it will be in the shop and I will need to wear my old helmet (not the one I wrecked) for a while till I get the new one. Nothing is broken, so I guess I was lucky.

Sorry about your crash. Lucky? No. Could have been worse though.

You are yet another case study for why helmets are so important. People arguing against them are brain dead.

If I recall correctly, rainman, the discount for an Atmos ends up being about as much as you can get one for on eBay, so they're not REALLY doing you any favors.

Or at least will be if they're in a wreck.

To the OP, sorry to hear you went down, heal up fast. The best thing is you're here typing it up, which means you're still with us.

Hope you heal fast.

Give Giro a call. The will send you another helmet for 30-40% off MSRP. No need to send your helmet back. I got mine replaced 2 months ago after a crash.

Great idea, thanks for the info. I have to get a new one also.

Rainman,

Glad to hear you were not more seriously hurt, God’s speed on the healing. +++1 on the helmet, saved my life as well. I have found the days after the crash hips, and shoulders are the worst.
What is your frame material? I am looking to send my carbon out to get x-rayed while I recuperate these next few months as the last thing I want is my forks, frame or bars to fail due to a crack after I finely get recuperated.

Anyone have any tips or folks they have used to check for hidden damage?
Blessings

It is a carbon fiber Bianchi. The only real damage I see is the rear derailleur hanger looks to be bent a bit. I looked it over good for any signs of damage to the frame and can see none. I am taking it to my local shop so they can inspect it. They are a great bunch of guys and I know they will treat me right.

Funny how some silly little slip-up like that can happen so fast and cause so much grief.
Heal fast...could have been much worse.

...did someone mention HIP?
