Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NOS panasonic custom build at lbs. Should I buy it?

Well it's not local, I was outta town on business and ran across a bike shop and paid a visit. I went in and spotted a panasonic dx5000. The shop basically only repairs bikes and sells a few used ones here and there along with parts. The owner's wife said they have had the frame for many years and her husband decided to build it. I have never seen a panasonic bike before. The frame is a weird yellow, made in japan and is 56cm. The owner installed ultegra components, and the bike is a 30 speed. Dont know about the wheels other then they have 700x23 tires. They claimed the bike weighs just under 20 pounds, and I could have it for $1100.00. This is the best chromoly framed bike I have ever seen. Would I be wasting my money on this bike? Or could I get something much better for the money? Im wanting to replace my old giant perigee I bought back in 93'.

The best Panasonic frames and forks were of very high quality...similar to the quality you would see today on a $2,000 bike with a high quality steel frame and steel fork. The high end Panasonic bikes are rarely seen on E-Bay, but don't have the mystique of a Schwinn Paramount and other "famous" names. On E-Bay, a good Panasonic in "like new" condition would likely sell for $150 to $250.

If the bike is a perfect fit and is in perfect condition, you would be getting a good deal in the $200 to $250 range. I would not pay more than that unless you are in love with the idea of having a Panasonic, or in love with the color, or there is something else "special" about this bike.
