Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

GPS/bike computer/tracking device

So I get this email from a friend of mine today....

OK, I haven't been able to find this, but sure it either does exist or it could exist because the technology is already there.

My wife is always worried about me when I'm riding. I thought it would be nice if I had a bike computer that had GPS on that she could log onto the computer and see where I was. If I stopped moving for along period of time, she would know to come and look for me in a ditch. She could also look and see how close I would be to getting home.

THEN I had the idea that it would be cool if we all had the same type of bike computer and we could track each other from our bike computers. We could create a fun new game called "Ride And Go Seek" where one person is it and they have to chase down everyone else throughout the city using the GPS tracker. That would be so cool and fun.

Anyways, if anyone knows of such a bike computer, please let me know. It would also be nice if it had cadence, HR and temperature, but I guess beggers can't be choosers... or can we!

Personally, I think "Ride and Go Seek" would rock! I know there's a cell phone aimed at parents for thier kids that is a locator device. You guys think there's anything on the horizon for us cyclists?

Many cell phone companies can provide a service like this. Sprint has Telenav and Xora.

Xora I've researched quite extensively... it'll end up costing around $30 a month more on your cell phone bill, but you can log into the web page and see location and a breadcrumb trail. VERY cool stuff. Ok, it does a LOT more stuff than this, but unless you're looking at it for a business the other stuff isn't very important... though maybe there are a couple things that could be useful... like setting up a 'perimeter' near the end of the ride and getting a notification that the person is almost done. (Or even the different rest stops and you'd get multiple notifications over time. )

Edit: I was researching this for a business... not sure if there are a minimum number of lines, but I don't recall anything like that

Check here: Xora.com

believe it or not someone has already patented bicycle lo-jack (with key-less remote too!) incorporated into a lock that spools around the seat post. i don't think it has actually been marketed though.

here it is:https://patimg2.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=...iew+first+page

US patent number 07104091

i did a report on this number last semester and its got some clever features, but it neglects the possibility of someone just pulling out the post and running off with the rest of the bike.

Bike scavenger hunts in the form of alleycats are already a blast, but adding GPS could be a really fun twist. i dont think any one has done yet, but i hope someone does now.

EDIT: to view the pictures on patent filings you need a TIFF viewer in your browser. i've only ever gotten the one linked through the patent office to work in internet explorer.
