Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

my latest build, sort of a CX wannabe or pseudo cross bike. Had an older Trek 1000 laying around that is in good shape but the drops are a little uncomfortable on a long ride and I've got a lot of spare parts from a few paramount builds, so I thought I'd see what I could do on a minimal budget. May not look like much but its fun to ride and makes an all around commuter bike.

Frame shipped was $425 (included fork, headset, seatpost, saddle)
Gruppo: $750 (included all cables and bearings needed)
Handlebars & Tape: $30
Aksium Wheelset: $165 (Chainlove)

So I guess the total was a bit closer to $1370. My cousin works at a bike shop so the building and labor was free.... well it cost me Chipotle.

New bike day. That's my new '97 Lemond Zurich. Equipped with Dura Ace-everything except for the crank (Ultegra). Mavic Helium wheels. Came with a Bontrager computer, a Zefala frame pump, a saddlebag with tools / patches / stuff, 3 pairs of tires, and a spare 9-speed cassette. Everything in good condition. Can't complain for $450.

Just picked up my first road bike the other day. $420 for this 44cm 2009 Specialized Vita. I believe the seat-post and fork are carbon (the fork says "carbon") on it. I was trying to find more information on this bike, but there doesn't seem to be any Vita's from 2009 that came with drops... so I'm curious if anyone can help me out with more info and let me know if I got an OK deal on it.

In any case, I really like the feel of it. I just need to get used to hood brakes.

Edit: Btw, I'm only 5ft and 1/4 inch tall.

Edit 2: Just figured it out.. had the year wrong: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...vitamultisport . Seems like I did pretty good with how much it cost https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/searc...spx?id=3029653

As of today, I have a 2013 Cannondale CAAD8 2300.
One of my local stores (Wooden Wheels) is having a blow-out sale and I couldn't resist the bike.
Plus, after spending some time on their GURU machine, they got the Cannondale fit perfectly to me. Wow, what a joy it is to ride. For a lower-end road bike, it's so much better than my old Trek 1000 and miles apart from my KHS Urban Xpress.

I've been riding my Lemond Tourmelet for the last 8 years and love the bike. Its new role will be for winter/rain use as my new BH Primsa arrives on Saturday. I've had the itch to get a carbon bike for the last year + and finally pulled the trigger after riding 6 different rigs. Very excited as the better weather approaches in the PNW and hopefully I can start putting some solid miles on the new bike. Pics to come.

My Soma ES

Hi. First post. I hope the picture works...

It's of my first custom build. A Soma ES, 58 cm.

Selected specs:

Sram 8-speed cassette
Sugino OX 601D crankset with 48/32-tooth rings
Dia-Compe brake levers and downtube shifters
Shimano derailleurs: Ultegra front, 105 rear
Surly Pacer fork
Tektro R-539 Long Drop Brakes
Hope Pro III hubs with H + Son SL42 rims

Painted her myself and threw on some random stickers for good measure. Really happy with how she turned out (although the paint job is very noticeably amateur when you get up close). I'm waiting on a Tange seatpost. Yes, it's steel. I'm sure it weighs a ton, but I'm not super weight conscious. Hopefully it's as comfortable as it is heavy.

Planning on doing some touring, then sizing down the steerer tube to get more of a leaned-in roadie feel. Or not, we'll see.

I've had her out with a small load on the rear rack, maybe 15 lbs. Very impressed with how she handled it. Also really outstanding on descents. As for acceleration... not her strong suit, but she gets up to a decent speed eventually. Overall just a really smooth all arounder that should last roughly a lifetime.

New to Road Cycling - picked up a true road bike

Hello, everyone!

Just getting started in road cycling. Ridden in a large charity, fund raising event for the last two years (on a cro-mo rigid MTB converted to road tires) and each year it has been more fulfilling.

Decided to bite the bullet and get myself on a an actual road bike for 2014. I enjoy cycling immensely and it is a fitness routine I will actually stick with as I enjoy it too much to consider it work.

I visited a LBS and found a great deal on a brand new 2012 Cannondale CAAD8 7 Sora Compact Double. I love this bike.

I rode a Trek 1.5 Tiagra and the CAAD8. The difference was like night and day. The CAAD8 was so smooth, comfortable and it seemed to fit me better from seat to bars. The Trek was a bit too compact for my tastes.

Anyway, I have spent the last few months reading, researching, learning and preparing for a summer of riding.

Just picked up my first bike in over 20 years... very excited to put some miles on her, get used to clipless pedals, and go on a few group rides...

CAAD8 6 Tiagra. Love it. Already killed the pie plate, reflectors, etc... added some speedplays, and just need 5 o'clock to get here so I can go wreck a few times...

Congratulations! This is exactly the same bike I got couple of years ago It took me a while to dial it, but now it fits perfectly. Once I have replaced Tiagra to 105 group, but I broke one shifter beyond repair (( Had to go back to original 9 speed Tiagra, and you know what? I am still happy with it

Thanks! I hope to get her dialed in over the next few weeks... the shop I bought it from took quite a bit of time, getting the seat right (I am using a loaner specialized seat currently), adjusting everything to my fit, watching me ride on a stand and outside, etc. Very happy with the purchase so far.

I bought this Specialized Secteur Sport Disc a month ago and have only rode the bike twice due to being out of the country for work but I'm looking towards spending more time with it. It came with 700x35 Kenda slant six for commuter riding but I changed them out this evening for these Michelin Pro4. Still got a lot to learn and experience. Happy riding y'all!

Funny. Sorry maybe I'm showing my age but we don't know each other, I bust balls with my buddies like anyone else, so I'll just leave the joke commentary alone. But yeah, the tires were a failed experiment. They go great on my wife's bike though LOL, so for now I swapped tires. Will eventually get to black but here's a pic of how it stands now.

Going to leave this bike alone for cruising rides and going to build a more typical all black cervelo for speed. I'll be back

LOVE this bike. It looks like a mix of Trek Madone and Scott Foil. Looks like the best of both. I really like the silver of the stem and seatpost. But I'd cut down the steerer.

A Cervelo for speed? Your Fuji looks like the Scott Foil + Madone, both are aero bikes made for speed...
