Helmet Question

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet Question

Does a Helmet has to be certified in your own country to be able to be road worthy to use? Like If I buy a Giro Atmos in eBay and that Atmos is certified safe to use in the USA, would that helmet be safe to use in AUSTRALIA? please help cheers!

No, you're upside down south of the Equater, so the helmet has to be engineered entirely backwards for Australia.

What do you think the answer is?

Ha ha ha ha ...I am looking at insurance claims if indeed I get injured. What I mean is, can the insurance come back and say "you are not wearing a helmet certified by Australia standards.

you have to know the standards that Aus uses, compare to what the helmet has passed.
Generally, Us helmets exceed most world standards.

I had the same issue with a Met Stradivarius 199 which is not available down under, so I rang the Australian distributor Cassons, who confirmed that it didn't have australian certification. They mentioned that the were illegal for racing and could have issues with regards to insurance. They said the helmet needs to have the approved certification sticker, I went ahead and got the helmet from overseas anyway.
Sometimes the distributors are loathe to go through the testing process because of the expense and the view that they might only sell a few of the helmets anyway.

Somewhat of a different helmet question. What is the Difference between a road helmet & a MTB helmet? That may sound dumb, but most of the time when I look in the cataloges I can't tell what distinguishes them. They usually show the MTB helmets with visors, but those are removable, no? And why doesn't a roadie want to shield the sun?

Yup I rang the insurance company where i have my income protection insurance from. Its perfectly ok. Even if I am not wearing a helmet I am covered by the policy as long as its not self harm. Also I am covered even if I am racing in a proper competition but the waiting time is 30 days instead of 15 days if its just a normal non racng accident/crash. All settled.

So its case to case and the best way to find out is to ring your insurance company.

CHEERS!

There are some misconceptions in this thread.

Not wearing a helmet on public property (illegal in Australia for several years) including roads, or wearing a non-Australian Standards approved helmet has affected court decisions (and insurance payouts) in the past.

American cycle helmet standards do not exceed Australian and several other helmet standards.

That is the reason I asked this question in this thread. Yes Australian helmet standards are stricter and harder to pass than the USA standard. However if my income protection insurance provider already provided me an e-mail correspondence and a phone call at that to clarify that indeed my premium income protection cover does cover me then I should believe them. It is documented by the insurance policy holder. The important thing is I asked the people insuring me. Again it depends on the insurance provider. That is why I went straight to mine to ask before doing anything.
