generally, how long do carbon rims last?
I have a few questions for those riding carbon rims:
1. How long do rims last before all that braking wears out the rim? We're not talking replacement due to damage, but just normal wear and tear from the brake pads.
2. Which wheel is more easily prone to damage: front wheel or rear wheel? The rear wheel handles 80% of the riders weight, but the front wheels is normally the first to strike an obstacle at full speed.

They last a long time with the right pads, longer than aluminum. but you have to make sure the pads do not have any embedded material in them.
It's about 50/50 and not possible to predict which wheel will fail more.

Haven't had my Zipp tubulars long enough to know, but I'm curious about the claim that the braking surface will last as long as aluminum. Just intuitively, CF is susceptable to abrasion, so I would think it would wear quicker.

^^ I would think it would depend on the resin compound of the cf. but generally I think that the plastic would be softer and wear faster. not sure though, just speculating.

I know that Nimble, who made my rims, suggest using Kool-Stop Ceramic pads, those pads are so soft that I wore them down 50% on just one mountain ride, with no visible wear on the rims. I now have about 1000 miles on carbon rims and have used both the Kool-Stops mentioned above and the nasty cork based pads and other than some deposits of rubber left on the braking surfaces (easily cleaned off with some mineral spirits) they show very little signs of wear. I will take some pictures next week after the AoMM ride.

I do a lot of heavy braking on my carbon rims every weekend when I go for long rides out of the city. I haven't noticed any wear on the rims yet, the pads are wearing like crazy. Also, the pads are swisstop yellow king's, so it's slowly and annoyingly transferring a faint yellow ring on my rims. That said, I just make sure to take the pads out and scrub out dirt and debris everyonce in a while.
