Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chain Rub

So, I was adjusting my limit screws today and cable tension, since I dropped my chain 3x yesterday. I have a 50/34x11-23 and I noticed when I have the gearing set to 34x11 I get chain rub, but not on the derailleur like one might expect. I get chain rub on the outer derailleur. How do I fix that? Fix the chain line? I know how to fix a chain line on a fixie, but does one adjust chain line on a roadie?

that's called cross chaining, and is to be expected (especially with a compact).

I thought that had to do with derailleur rub. Man I suck with terminology. Anyway, so there is nothing that can be done about this?

Don't use 34x11.

As for the chain drop - you might want to check the height of the front d cage. It should only be 1-2 mm (yes, mm) above the top of the teeth on the large ring.

I was having problems with this, and noticed that my new bike (as it came from the shop) was set about 5 mm above the large ring teeth. Moving it down 3 mm solved the chain flop.

I wasn't using 34x11; I was just checking all my gears. MY derailleur height was the first thing I adjusted, so that should be ok.

I have a compact and had the same problem. I took off my front derailure and hooked the cable up to a braze on clamp (carbon fiber)......Walaa..no more chain rub, saves weight, more areo, less unsightly mess, etc.

Note: I ride a circuit loop with moderate hilly sections of which I do not use front D.
Your scenario may differ.

+1, I just discovered and fixed the same issue this weekend.
