What to buy next? (noobie)
I've been riding for a couple months now, and I'm slowly getting some gear. I'm hoping to get something new for Father's Day, so I'm wondering what you guys think I should go with.
Here's what I have:
I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck. What item would provide the best boost in performance and/or comfort?
Here's what I'm debating. Which one would you suggest (or something else)?
Thanks for your thoughts!
Andrew
Here's what I have:
- used Schwinn road bike (rides great!)
- Trek helmet
- pumps (frame and floor)
- water bottles
- spare tubes & patch kit
I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck. What item would provide the best boost in performance and/or comfort?
Here's what I'm debating. Which one would you suggest (or something else)?
- computer (I think having cadence would help pace myself better)
- gloves (my wrists and fingers still hurt a bit after a ride)
- shorts (I'm still riding in regular shorts, and my butt gets sore)
Thanks for your thoughts!
Andrew

gloves and shorts are more important than the computer, in fact i will never ever ride without gloves again, mostly because i am a mountainbiker and if you fall on your hands thats a bad thing, anyways i still get blisters weven wearing gloves. the hurting wrists could be do to the angle of the bar stem length etc. you should also get some monkey butt'r (its exactly what you think it is!) nashbar has 20 dollar cyclocomputers, inexspensive gloves and i think they have shorts too. nashbar.com

yes, definitely get the shorts first, then the gloves, then the computer if those are the three options which interest you the most.

Thanks a ton for the quick responses!
I'm open to other ideas as well, if there's something more important than shorts & gloves. These are just my ideas on what might be next to purchase.

Shorts, then gloves, then a computer cheap enough that you can keep saving for pedals and shoes.
Really, after shorts, clipless pedals and cycling-specific shoes are the biggest upgrade you can make.

Oh and flooshee, if you're going to go try on shorts somewhere, I'd strongly recommend trying on some bib shorts as well. I have regular and bib and the bibs are awesome...regular shorts are perfectly fine though.

Bibs. They're more expensive but they're totally worth it.
And after that, I'd say clipless pedals and shoes.

I cant believe nobody has told him he needs zipps yet.
definately get gloves and shorts first, I lodged a rock in my hand when I fell over at a stop light last year, it was really dumb, gloves would have helped a bunch.. especially if you go down at speed.

Shoes/cleats and pedals are next, but they're a lot more $$$

Shorts, then gloves, then a bigger leap to clip-on pedals and shoes
I feel naked riding with non-cycling specific shorts and no gloves on.

shorts, pedals/shoes, computer (it just makes it more fun), gloves (unless you're uncomfortable without them).

Two pairs of shorts: $39.95 each (Go to aerotech designs. Nice bang for the buck.)
One pair of gloves: $10-15
Sigma cyclocomputer: $30 w/ cadence (Sigma makes a good computer for the price. Search the forums there is a thread about Sigma computers here in this section.)

I'd say computer, its a great motivator to go for longer distances, longer distances, however, are a great motivator for shorts

Shorts for sure. I don't wear gloves and would suggest a jersey. Bibs are nicer than shorts, but they do get hot.

Agree with all the comments re: shorts/bibs and gloves being far more important than a computer.
If you are having wrist and butt pain, a professional bike fitting might also be worth considering.
