Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cherry.Broken

So Thursday, my wife asks me what I want to do for Father's Day weekend.

I think about it for about 2 seconds and reply, I want to do my first century.

So I eat well yesterday, get my kit washed after riding home from work, and try to get to bed early.

I'm up at 5:00, get dressed, eat a little, and do my business (KevinMcDade knows what I am talking about), and hit the road at 5:50 (mind you sunrise here is 5:07)

I had gotten online last night and looked at possible routes (first season in this area). I decide to take an out and back on NH State Route 10 north to Lisbon, NH, about 50 miles exactly. The whole route is right along the Connecticut River on the border with VT.

I tried to keep the route fairly flat because I lived in Texas before and it was flat there. In addition, I am a clydesdale.

I think total climbing was between 3000-3500 feet.

I took plenty of food just in case so I can keep fueled (thanks for the tip Machka).

Things went pretty well. I did not get any cramps till about mile 75, but ate another banana and took some poor man's Sportlegs (same thing but was a regular supplement - much cheaper)

At that point I had some pretty bad lactic acid buildup bothering me, but I just took it easy and let the ride happen.

Let me say that in late spring, the Upper Valley of NH along the Connecticut River may be one of the most gorgeous places on earth.

The biggest elevations changes were within 12 miles of home, so I hit them at the beginning and end of the ride. No biggie except coming back in I had to take it nice and easy, about 7 mph up the last one.

Overall I am pretty happy.

Final stats:
Miles: 101.06
Riding Time: 6:00:03
Avg: 16.8
Total Time: 6:36
Avg: 15.3
Calories Burned (According to Kreuzotter): 5173

Body check:

Heart: Good
Lungs: Good
Legs: Tired

Me at the end:

PS. I also want to say that this is a pretty big deal for me because 8 years ago I was 23 years old and weighed 430+ lbs.

See, people can change

Try the real Sportlegs -- works much better than simple CalMag + potassium supplements.

BTW, congrats on the century and on dropping so much weight. That's pretty cool.

Now if you moved to San Fransisco your pedigree would be washed away. Good job man.

Great job. Super! Congrats!!! OFS!! Only 36 minutes of non riding!!?? I needed 1 1/2 hours of break time to ride 62 miles. I'm still just dreaming of 16 mph averages.

oh, no, plenty of rednecks in New Hamster. not the hillbilly kind though, more of a lumberjack, or fahmah type.

For work, I was driving through Lisbon about 3 days a week until a few months ago. I want to make a two day trip sometime this year, from where I am over the Kancamagus all the way to where it intersects 302, and over to Littleton, spend the night, and then either back down 302 to home, or over through Jefferson to Gorham, and then back down 16.

You down around the Hanover area?

Way to go Lecterman! You first century is a great milestone. I'm hoping to do my first later in the season, having started riding about a month ago.

Indeed it is! I used to ride my motorcycle around there years ago and have taken a few trips up to Burlington, VT.

A 16+ MPH average speed for that ride is damn impressive.

Congrats,

Scott

Yep. Lebanon specifically.

I wanted to get a shot with my camera phone of the Kancamangus Hwy sign and the lost river sign, but I was trying to limit my time off the bike.

Wow. Congrats on the weight loss. I am hoping to complete my first century soon as well and I have to say, to do it out and back the first time is a pretty ballsy move. I'm a wuss so if anything goes wrong on my first attempt I'd rather be close to home. Maybe I'll cowboy up and do it out and back though when the time comes just because it would make it that much more fulfilling. Thanks for sharing your story and again congrats.
