Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bib advice

I realize this has been discussed before but I have a couple questions I may have missed in my search.

For the past few years I have ridden with Sport Hill shorts that I picked up in a local bargain bin for about $20 each. No problems, but I have nothing to compare them to. I have decided it's time to get some bibs. I get out 4 - 5 times/week for a minimum of 10 miles each. (To work and so forth) I cringed at spending $110 on some Pearl Izumi or Castelli bib's at my LBS. But I'm just not sure if I ride enough to justify spending that kind of money, or if I even need to justify it. Is the performance of of a bib that much better than shorts? (cheap shorts for that matter)

Are the PI's that much better than, say, Aero Tech designs (at about 1/2 the price)?

I'd rather drop $50 - $60 but want to get something that will last also so that is not my driving factor.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would say check ebay. And look into Santinis. If you are not riding much I don't think it matters.

For your first pair of bibs, buy from a local shop where you can try them on first. Bibs have to fit both your waist and your height and buying via mail order is not that easy. Pearl Izumi's low end "Quest" bibs retail for $65 and many bike shops carry them.

i would say that considering you're not going out on long rides, performance brand bib's should be fine...

In that range you can get descent bibs from velowear. Specially if you can get them on sale. I think they are much better then performance stuff.

If you're only doing short rides, why bother with bibs?

I have the Pearl Izzumi attack bib, that's like $89 I think. While it was nice, shorts worked well for me also. I haven't gone on long rides yet with my bibs but stick to $30 shorts and get a couple of them.

Thanks for the advice folks. I did find a pair of Santini's at the LBS. (Clearance 50% off - woohoo!)

By the way what would constitute 'long rides' and 'not getting out much' (or getting out a lot)? I've always been curious what others think on this.
