Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle Adjustments

Hey everyone. I recently got a Specialized Toupe and I mostly like it, but the seatpost on my Trek 1000 only allows for nose up or nose down and not level. When adjusted nose down I slide forward and when nose up, I feel a little sore between the legs after riding. I'm assuming that my only real option is to get a new seatpost that is more adjustable, correct? If so, can anyone offer any recommendations?

Could also be that your saddle is too far back. You should be sitting on your sit bones not the area between your legs.

The fore-aft adjustment is pretty spot-on. I am definitely sitting on my sit bones.

The standard Bontrager post has a "micro" adjust ratchet that's anything but micro. I replaced mine for the same issue you're having with a higher level Bontrager that has the single side accessible adjustment that allows infinite adjustment to tilt. That head is on all Bontrager seatposts, I think, higher than the "Select" level. There is one in aluminum and several in carbon.

Take the bike back to the dealer. If the dealer can not get your saddle "dead" level, the seat post needs to be replaced.

After the saddle is dead level, position the bars so that the top of the stem and the highest portion of the bars are level with the top of the saddle. Having the top of the bars level with the top of the saddle puts your weight firmly on the sit bones, and off of the soft bits. After your saddle and sit bones get used to each other, you ought to be able to ride for hours without any discomfort.

It sure would be nice if they would just include a decent seat post, or at the very least allow it to adjust to level. Oh well, I'll take a look at the Bontrager and Thomson offerings as suggested. I'd imagine my LBS has both.

Thanks!

Well, after a visit to my LBS I ended up going with a Thomson Elite. Unfortunately they have to order one so I'll have to wait a few days. Oh well. It is definitely a nice seatpost...much better than the stock Bontrager on my bike.
