Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what kind of bike should i buy?

I am looking to buy my first roadbike but I am unsure of what kind of roadbike to buy. I will mainly be riding on the roads but rarely I will go on a dirt path. I am looking to buy a bike that is between $500-$700, I am 16 years old and looking to get into biking. I want to be able to bike pretty long distances (30-50 miles). I want it to last for awhile. I am looking to get a bike that can move pretty fast but I am not looking to go into racing anytime soon. I really want to stick somewhere between this price range though.

2 ideas. Check out the Under $700 bike postings and spend some time in your local bike store. LBS for short. When you say dirt path are you talking rail to trail type thing or actual off road path?

I found a generous individual that gave me a great bike. There are deals out there. Local bike shops usually have good used bikes or posted ads. I had to invest several hundred dollars for clipless pedals, clothing, and tuning.

I just got my first roadbike, a Scott Speedster S30 from a semi-local bike shop. I did a lot of online searching (including these forums here) before I decided on what I wanted. I would agree with visiting bike shops (I visited about 3 before deciding) because there may be some closeouts that will catch your attention. I would highly recommend visiting a Performance Bicycle store because I got all my gear, pedals, and shoes there all on sale. They have sales all the time... and the people there were super friendly.
