Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Metallic popping sound from Trek 1200

I have a one year old Trek 1200 with upgraded wheel set and new cassette on rear.
When I pedal with much power, I get a metallic tink type sound at the bottom of the left pedals rotation. It does not make it in the stand, while coasting downhill or on a level, easy surface. It makes it in the saddle or out.
I took it to my dealer and without really looking at it, they recommend I grease the threads on the bottom bracket. So I took of the crankset and greased the two male ends sticking out of the bottom bracket. I did not remove the bracket. The bottom brackets spins freely and smoothly.
I spoke with them on the phone and asked if that is what they meant and they said yes. They also said sometimes it is the headset even though it sounds like it is coming from the bottom bracket.
I took the bike apart last fall at bike school and the headset bearings were in bad shape.
I also put on the original wheel and cassette. It still makes the sound.
Any ideas on what I should look to replace. I am thinking do the headset since the bearings are bad anyway and then the bottom bracket.
I like to order from Performance Bike and how would I order the right parts. I have Tiagra components and a triple crankset.

I had a ticking sound about a year after I got mine. I had my bike shop pull the bottom bracket and there was a crack in the plastic case that goes around it I believe. They replaced it, and it’s been fine ever since. You might have the same thing going on.

Try putting a little grease on the skewers. Yes, I know. A thread like this was just locked yesterday. But I had the same problem and after trying everything else a little grease solved the problem. Ok. Let the flame war begin.

Really need advice on how I determine what part to buy.
I hate to go to the dealer.
I don't see a bottom bracket at Performance that I know for sure is right, and the one that does look right has three sizes listed.
Please be nice to a newbie.

They didn't replace the BB as I recall. (This was a few years ago) Just a plastic piece in the inside.

Personally I would take it to the shop. Maybe you just have a crank coming loose, but it could also be something cracked in the bottom bracket (like Random). Ask the bike shop folks if you can watch them why they do the work - I have never been refused when I have asked - usually these folks are pretty cool.

Oh, and for jengel, perhaps if you lube up your crank before you re-insert...???

Here is what it was. The interaction between the left cleat and pedal.
Called Speedplay and they had me tighten the set screw a little and problem solved.

+1 Since you mentioned you got a new wheel set that's the first place I'd look.
I grease my Mavic skewers about every 6 weeks or so. Keeps the ticking sound away.

Check your crank bolts as well. If you've got any rust or corrosion on any of them, they can give you a popping sound that is hard to find. I pulled the chainrings apart and found the culpret quickly enough. A little cleaning and grease solved my problem.
