Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

JR. Road Bike Recommendations

My 10 yr old daughter is hot after me to get her a road bike and I have to admit I like the idea. I think it would be really fun to have her along. She has fallen in love with a Jr.Specialized at the LBS but I have is I can't justify $650.00 for a bike she is going to grow out of in a year (or 2).

What should I do here? Are there cheaper bike out there or is everything around this price range? There isn't a whole lot of JR info on the internet.

I was just about to make a similar post about my 10 year old daughter. We got lucky recently, because the owner of a shop nearby runs a Tuesday night training race and has a bunch of JR racing bikes he lends out to the kids, so I'm all set for now. When we return it, then I'll be in the market to buy something. I was thinking used, maybe Ebay, then re-sell it when she outgrows it. I have the benefit of a 6 year old boy that may grow into it.

keep checking fleabay. We've got a Felt F24 and a Trek KDR-1000 - got the felt new from the LBS at a good discount and the Trek was used, but also at a very good price.

Before buying each, I was watching ebay and they'd show up there fairly regularly, but never more than 2 or 3 at a time.

Orbea also makes a jr. bike.

My kids love theirs and if you look at fleabay you'll see that these bikes retain a value of $300-$400 or so even for ones a few years old.

I got a Trek 24" bike at the local bike swap for $150. That was a smoking deal. I also got a Redline Conquest 24 cyclocross bike for $250 on ebay. The Trek was used, the Redline was new. It took a lot of watching to get both of those bikes at those prices. My local shop has a Redline 24 for $600. I have never seen them for less than that in a shop. I suspect that when my kids are done with them I can make a profit on both, unless I pass them on to family members. The latter is more likely.

My kids really love these bikes. They draw a lot of attention when we ride, and a lot of smiles. They are the only kids around that have such nice bikes. This encourages them to want to ride, which is priceless in my opinion.

Trek makes one, the Redline is great, Orbea makes one, Ibex has one, and for that really spoiled kid, Colnago makes one.

griffen bikes has a program where you buy a new bike, and you can send in the frame when your kid outgrows it, and they will send you a bigger frame. I'm not sure if the child has to be racing or not.
