Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Advice needed Quickly! Good Deal?

Im looking for my first Road bike, and i think this may be a good bike to start with.

It's a 6 speed which would indicate it is older than '95. Probably mid/late '80s. Also, may not be indexed shifting.

Not a bad deal for $200 but you can bet that early alu frame will be somewhat harsh. Still, I'd rather have this bike than any new $200 bike.

Good luck.

I agree with Rad that it is older than indicated. Vintage-trek.com indicates the black with magenta 1200 was made in 1988. That is consistent with the 6 speed freewheel. Personally, if I were going to buy a bike from that era, in that price range, I would go with steel. There are a lot of steel bikes out there in the $260 range (including shipping), many of which are Treks.

I concur on the age. It may also be a Biopace chainring. FWIW, I have a 1400 from that era (1990) and I don't think the ride is that bad.

Also, Treks from that era used anodized Matrix rims. On higher milage bikes, there is usually signs of wear on the braking surface of the rim. Judging from the pic, this bike may be relatively low milage. Much lower milage than mine, which still has the original 105 components.

[edit] Mine is about 24lbs, ready to ride. A bit on the heavy side.

Thanks for the good info. I'd rather spend money on a good used bike, than the same amount on a new low quality bike.

That shows how new you are. Just wait, we'll corrupt you yet. btw did you end up buying it? It should be a good start, but I will add that shift lever/brake lever combos are a very nice recent invention and might be your first upgrade if you don't like reaching down to shift.

I have a Trek 1000 from the late '80's and the ride really isn't bad at all - you get more vibration or road buzz coming through than some newer bikes, but on good roads it is still a pretty good ride.

Im already fairly corrupted, but there is always room for improvement. And yes, i did end up buying it, and you're spot on with the first upgrade i have in mind. Aug 6th i leave for basic training (Air Force), so by the time i get out of that and tech school and finally get stationed somewhere, im sure i'll have some duckets to upgrade with. In the mean time, i'll slap some some handlebar tape on it, and do some cleaning/lubing/adjusting.

Thats good to know, and since its my first road bike, i have nothing to compare it to. As long as i never ride a road bike built in the last 10 years, I have nothing to worry about.

Can't look at E-Bay while at work, but FWIW from what I remember about that time period....I have pretty good resolution because it was right when I started, and I moved each year creating little specific time capsules of memories....

I was blown away by a friend that had brand new 7spd 105 indexed in late 1988 or early 1989.
