Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think it's pretty common that most parts makers aren't completely correct on their weights. Weight Weenies has a list of bike parts, what the claimed weight is, and what the actual weight was. Sometimes it's only off by a little bit (plus or minus), sometimes it's a big difference.

I only ask b/c the one wheel I ever weighed, the Ritchey DS something or other I have, weighed *exactly* 650g on my kitchen scale, which is what they claim it weighs. Go figure. I was surprised to hear such a bold claim.

Most are off but not all. I think bar makers are the worst listings as they usually list the same weight for all bars but the listed one is the smallest in the line

According to weight weenies, they do. But then, so does Mavic.

i guess it's acceptable to be off by a little bit, because there are manufacturing tollerances, but sometimes those numbers are off by a lot.

it's a business though, and like every other business their goal it to make money, and lighter sells better. end of argument...

Looks like almost all of mavic's wheels are overweight.

Easton Ascent II Wheelset...

Easton's claimed weight...1419g...Front 618g...Rear 809g...

Hammertoe's weigh in......1486g...Front 626g...Rear 860g...

Hammertoe's weight included rim tape...

67g difference...0.147 lbs...

I say Easton is pretty close and would not call there claimed weight lies...

Your LBS is blowing smoke...

Interestingly, most of the Zipp model weight claims were conservative and WW found them to actually be LIGHTER. You Get What You Pay For #231. Of course if it's not worth shelling out $1950 (current MSRP for Zipp 404s) for lighter wheels, who can blame you? Nevertheless,

Zipps RULE.

I thought you posted recently that after spending some time on the Zipps, you DID state that you would probably pay full retail for them?

I don't really care if it weighs 10 grams more than spec. What I love about my Easton Circuits is that they're damn fine wheels that can take a beating.

Think about it this way, overspec means it's over built and it's a STRONGER wheel.

PatentCad's wheels on the other hand, oh boy.. way under spec. It must be missing like, an entire layer of carbon. He's a dead man.

It means Patentcad is the guy who wrote the dialog for the matrix.

I am the Architect. I created the Matrix. I've been waiting for you. You have many questions, and although the process has altered your consciousness, you remain irrevocably human. Ergo, some of my answers you will understand, and some of them you will not. Concordantly, while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant. Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the matrix. You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden assiduously avoided, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. Which has led you, inexorably, here. It is interesting reading your reactions. Your five predecessors were, by design, based on a similar predication: a contingent affirmation that was meant to create a profound attachment to the rest of your species, facilitating the function of the One. While the others experienced this in a general way, your experience is far more specific. Vis-à-vis: love. As I was saying, she stumbled upon a solution whereby nearly ninety-nine percent of the test subjects accepted the program provided they were given a choice - even if they were only aware of it at a near-unconscious level. While this solution worked, it was fundamentally flawed, creating the otherwise contradictory systemic anomaly, that, if left unchecked, might threaten the system itself. Ergo, those who refused the program, while a minority, would constitute an escalating probability of disaster.
Believe me when I say we have a difficult time ahead of us. But if we are to be prepared for it, we must first shed our fear of it. I stand here, before you now, truthfully unafraid. Why? Because I believe something you do not? No, I stand here without fear because I remember. I remember that I am here not because of the path that lies before me but because of the path that lies behind me. I know *exactly* what you mean. Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?
