Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pleae explain why shipping my bike doesn't add up...

with all the searches I've done on this forum. Considering buying a Trico hard case. Dimensions are 47x31x11. Weight is 31 lbs. Let's say the packaged bike will weigh 55 lbs. From previous posts, I was expecting somewhere in the range of $40 for ground service. So, I plugged everything in, chose Ft Worth to New Orleans as my from/to, $2000 declared value, and I get just shy of $90 to ship. What's the deal? If it costs that much one way for that short of distance, I won't be buying a case and will do without my bike when I have to travel.

I always get the same thing when I price UPS on-line. If you go to an actual UPS center, it will end up being half of what the internet says. I worked for UPS for many years, and I cannot explain why the internet quotes such high prices.

FedEx probably has a lower weight limit than UPS. UPS has more restrictive size limits.

Might also be an issue with New Orleans?

Dimensional weight will get you every time. Shipping 55 lbs. in a regular sized boxed from DFW to New Orlaeans via UPS ground should cost $16.97. When you plug in the size of the case you are dealing with, the price jumps to $71.60, as it is considered OVERSIZE 3 by UPS. Sorry but that is the way most freight companies work, space is limited on their trucks, so when you take up a lot of space, you pay for it.

Understand, yet it's contradictory to what a lot of folks are posting. Colorado Cyclist even advertises the case (as with the other cases they carry) as "Sized for UPS -- $39," or something along those lines.

I just shipped my bike UPS today. 54x30x8 36 lbs It came out to just over $40. It is at the max of UPS size limits. Their formula for oversize is L+2(H)+2(W)<= 130 is not over size. Anything over 130 is oversize and more than doubles in price. I first measured it at 54x30x9 and the total was $107. Ouch!

There ae some good folders that can be taken as carry-on luggage. Would that be an option for you?

It is a matter of inches. If you use 47 x 30 x 10 as Trico claims on their site, shipping is $19.06 from DFW to New Orleans. If you change any dimension by 1 inch, shipping goes to oversize 2 and the price changes to $25.66, If you change two dimensions by an inch to your stated dimensions of 47 x 31 x 11, size changes to oversize 3 and the cost jumps to $71.66. I would reccomend that you find a UPS owned drop off faciltiy and take it there for measurement and price verification if you have time.

It cost me $40 to check mine at the airport as luggage. On the return trip they didnt charge at all. Why ship it instead of taking it with you?

you got lucky. should be $80 each way. plus, some monkey gets to open your case and not give a crap about how it's packed after they move things around in there.

DHL Ground is pretty inexpensive and the cost for insurance is reasonable. I would go to you local Office Max and see what they charge. You will be pleasantly surprised...

AT 46 x 30 x 10 my UPS software quotes $135 to Alaska but does not list a transit time. If I go to UPS.com it shows a transit time of 5 days. Drop off today and it arrives on Friday in Anchorage, but the cost for 55 lbs. in a 46 x 30 x 10 box goes to $235 without additional insurance.

Why not take it as baggage?

Also, there's a couple of places that rent road bikes in Anchorage, if that's where you're going. One is Sunshine Sports. I believe they have full-on road bikes. Another place is Downtown Bicycle Rental. They have a limited offering of normal road bikes, but a lot of decent quality flat-bar road bikes. There are others.

prices have gone up. used to cost me around 40$ for a standard bike box w/ fed ex. it's around what you say 90$ or so. if you go with a smaller but wider box that where you take off the rear wheel it's less.
